Brief Biography
Graduation from Medical School at Freiburg University, Germany, in 1967. During medical school years, completion of a dissertation (in biochemistry) to obtain a doctoral degree (Dr.med.) from Freiburg University. The degree was awarded in 1967. From 1967 until 1969, clinical training (Medizinalassistent) at the Freiburg University hospitals in internal medicine, pediatrics, and surgery. Subsequently, postdoctoral research fellow at the Max-Planck Institute for Immunobiology in Freiburg (1969-1971) and at the Department of Pathology, University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut (1972-1973). The fellowships were awarded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). From 1973 until 1980, faculty member at the Institute of Immunology and Serology, University of Heidelberg, Germany, receiving a Dr.med.habil. degree in 1978. Since 1980, faculty member at the Department of Pathology, University of Michgian Medical School, with teaching responsibilities (General Pathology 580/630) and research activities (partially NIH-funded) focusing on pathomechanisms of inflammatory processes leading to primary and secondary organ injury.
