It is with great pleasure that I announce to you the creation of a new A. James French Society of Pathologists educational program designed for the benefit of both our residents as well as the membership. The Society has established a traveling fellowship for pathology residents. The fellowship will be supported by funds from the society. Residents eligible to apply must be in a training program that has a French Society member that has a responsible role in the resident’s education and must be far enough advanced in training to benefit from the experience. The idea behind the fellowship is to broaden the experience of our residents while giving them the opportunity to see “how things are done elsewhere” and to serve as ambassadors for the parent institution. Having a senior level resident serve as a “visiting fellow” can only benefit everyone involved. I anticipate the competition for this experience to be intense. The Board of Directors of the Society will review the applications and determine the successful candidate(s). The resident will be reimbursed for travel expenses incurred during the fellowship up to whatever level is established by the Board of Directors and is documented by receipts submitted at the completion of the fellowship. Applications will be readily available through the Society web site and should be completed and submitted prior to May 1 of each year. Initially we anticipate no less than one and no more than three traveling fellowships to be offered every year. The selected resident(s) should complete the fellowship prior to the last six months of his or her training. At the conclusion of fellowship the resident is to give a report in writing of his or her observations and impressions to the President of the Society. This report will be shared with the membership. The names of the recipients of the A. James French Traveling Fellowship will be published in the meeting program just as the names of the winners of the M. R. (Gus) Able Award are published. I hope you will join me with enthusiasm in supporting this new education initiative. I look forward to the opportunity for open discussion with each of you. |
