THE A. JAMES FRENCH SOCIETY OF PATHOLOGISTS

Stephen R. Ramsburgh, M.D.
President, A. James French Society of Pathologists

October 2007

This will be a short note to catch you up on the events of the last month or so.  “New Frontiers in Diagnostic Pathology: An Update for Practicing Physicians” was very well attended by both members of the A. James French Society as well as practicing physicians within the Tri-State area.  We even had one physician from Chile. The total number of attendees was 85.  Approximately 40% were members of the French Society. We were hoping for a mix of attendees and our hopes were all realized.  Our current residents were almost always in attendance at both the social events and the presentations.  The academic portion of the program was outstanding.  All of the presentations, the breakout sessions, the plenary sessions, and Dr. Colby’s talk were of the highest quality.  The last morning of the conference, Dr. Colby gave the annual A. James French lecture and then he alternated with Dr Myers discussing several challenging pulmonary cases. They made a great tag team and the presentations were absolutely stellar.

The feedback we received from the attendees has been most satisfying.  We feel the course will only improve as it gains a more widespread reputation.  I suspect he attendance will rise accordingly.

Within the next month or two, we will select the A. James French traveling fellowship award winners.  You already know how pleased I was with last year’s experience.  We intend to send more residents this year, and we are already receiving applications from both within and without the University of Michigan.  So far we have not placed a limit on the number of residents that we will send on this traveling fellowship, but I anticipate that within a year or two we will have to place some sort of cap on just how many residents we can offer this experience.

Meanwhile, we were also receiving nominations for the M.R. Abell Award given annually to our “top resident”.  The list of candidates for this year’s award is very impressive and the decision will be most difficult.

That’s all the news for now.  You can be proud of your legacy with the University of Michigan, and I hope you will return soon and often to maintain those ties you have with this department.
