This is the last letter I will be writing you as the President of the A. James French Society of Pathologists. I have enjoyed the two years that I have served as your President. We have made simple significant changes involving the French Society and as best I can tell they have all been very positive. What we have been able to accomplish has hinged on three people who have been indispensable to me. Laura Blythe (every organization needs a Laura Blythe) has provided historical perspective, insight and good old-fashioned common sense to all the issues with which we have had to deal with over the past two years. Gene Napolitan has been supportive and has essentially given me free reign to spend the A. James French money in ways that are both beneficial to the Society as well as to the residents for whom we are so concerned. Barbara McKenna, the past President of the Society, has been an invaluable resource for me. She is a master at looking at “the process”. She brings to any discussion a common sense and practical and doable suggestions that I have found invaluable. One bit of news concerning my latest and last idea. I intend to institute an A. James French Visiting Professorship. This professorship will be strictly limited to active members of the A. James French Society who have received some or all of their training in pathology at the University of Michigan. Obviously, the visiting “professor” will not always be a professor. I hope to tap the whole spectrum of graduates of this program to include those in an academic as well as private practice setting. I am unaware that other organizations like the A. James French Society have this type of visiting professorship. Needless to say, my list of people that I will try to have participate in this program is quite long and represents the very best pathologists that I have seen train here at the University of Michigan. I hope you will share with me my enthusiasm for this project. It has been an honor and a pleasure for me to serve as your President. The single greatest pleasure for me has been the vast number of people that I have met that have connections with the University of Michigan Department of Pathology. Thank you for your support.
