Working in the Morgue Suite is referred to as a unique experience in which no two days are the same. The Autopsy Assistant provide support to Pathology faculty and house officers for the completion of all autopsies including those which are completed on brains only. This includes coordination of paperwork required by the UMHS in compliance with all applicable laws and/or regulations as well as assisting with dissection. In addition, the staff in this unit interact daily with funeral directors and faculty and staff from the patient floors with regard to the status of autopsies which have been or will be performed.

The UMHS Pathology Morgue Suite staff includes two full-time Autopsy Assistant and two "on-call" Autopsy Assistant. The on-call Autopsy Assistant are responsible for assisting with autopsies which are performed on Sundays and for "brain only" autopsies seven nights per week.
