The Cytopathology Service accessions approximately 50,000 gynecologic and 6,000 non-gynecologic specimens annually. The Bethesda System for reporting cervical/vaginal cytologic diagnosis is utilized by the technical and physcian staff dedicated to this service. Fine needle aspirations are performed both as scheduled procedures and on an emergent basis. The laboratory utilizes the Cytyc Thin Prep Processor for slide preparation when indicated.

For additional information regarding specific processing and procedures, refer to the Pathology Laboratories Handbook.

Clinical consultative services are provided for all University of Michigan Health System programs and can be requested by internal and external physicians, hospitals and clinics. Slides from external physicians and hospitals must be accompanied by a letter or pathologist's report.

Requisitions: available on patient floors and in clinics (as requested).

To speak to a cytopathologist, or to schedule a fine needle aspirate, call Surgical Pathology at 936-6799.
