PREFACE
This booklet has been compiled by the Blood Bank and Transfusion Service staff of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers. Its purpose is to give physicians, nurses and other health care personnel a readily available reference and to establish guidelines for Blood Bank procedures. This booklet serves as the official transfusion policies for the institution. The Blood Transfusion Policies and Standard Practices manual and the Circular of Information for The Use of Human Blood and Blood Components are the official references for the administration of blood products for the Department of Nursing at the University of Michigian Hospitals and Health Centers. The contents of this booklet have been reviewed and approved by the Transfusion Committee and the Executive Committee on Clinical Affairs. Our goal is to explain in some detail the necessity for some of our rules and procedures. In this version we have attempted to reduce the amount of text in favor of tables and bulleted lists so that it is easier to find information. We have incorporated a description of all tests in chapter 1. We have extensively revised chapter 4 on blood components and added infusion instructions. We have significantly expanded chapter 5 on blood utilization to provide clinicians with guidance on decision making. A table of transfusion reactions by symptom cluster has been to Chapter 7 on to allow information to be found quickly. Additions have been made to the maximum surgical blood order schedule (MSBOS). We urge you to contact Blood Bank personnel if you have any questions concerning the booklet. All of the policies are in a constant state of review, and we welcome suggestions for changes and constructive criticism. Any alterations made to the content of the online version will be clearly noted (in red) and dated and will supercede the content of the paper booklet. Please send comments
