Massive Transfusion Protocol

Purpose

A massive transfusion protocol assists in identifying patients who need or are receiving large quantities of blood (greater than one blood volume in 24 hours). The 24 hour period begins with the first unit of Red Blood Cells issued.

Blood Volume

The blood volume estimate is based on the age of the patient.

Blood Bank Action

Notify Blood Bank physician when patient approcahes the levels of Red Blood Cells issued.

Policy

When the number of Red Blood Cells issued approachs the one blood volume, the technologist will contact a Blood Bank physician.
