Welcome to the 2011 Pathology Staff Helping Hands (PSHH) Website

Each year Department of Pathology faculty and staff sponsor a number of fundraising events to benefit University of Michigan patients and their families who have a severe financial need. With the guidance of the UMHS Department of Social Work, we endeavor to help the neediest of UM's patients, by giving each $1000 during the holiday season.

We welcome the participation of everyone. Pathology faculty, staff, friends, family, and other UM employees and friends, as well as generous friends and family from all over the country are encouraged to participate. We are grateful for everyone's input.

CHARITY CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

MAY 31 - ART PLAQUE AUCTION - Artists bought wooden plaques, decorated them and donated them for auction. Spearheaded by Liz Walker, this endeavor raised $1064.

JUNE 16 - STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL - $5 bought either a sundae or a shortcake. UMHS Pathology Lounge, MSI Lounge, Traverwood II, 10am -1pm. SO SWEET. Thanks to Bev Smith and Rebecca Roberts and all who served the strawberry delights. This delicious event raised $456.

JUNE 21 - IN-DOOR COOK OUT - The first day of Summer was welcome in appropriate fashion! In front of the UMHS (2nd floor hospital) Path Lounge we sold the quitessential picnic lunch from 10:30am to 1:00pm. $5 bought a hot dog, drink, chips and dessert. Items are also priced ala carte. Thanks to Marie Moorhouse for organizing this culinary extravaganza which made $272.

AUGUST 29 - FLEECE JACKET SALE - The sale of these fantastic fleece jackets was held on August 29 and end on Sept. 23. These very popular, warm jackets with the maize block M and "Department of Pathology" on the front are perfect for many locations. You need at least two, one for at work (in cold labs) and one for home.

OCTOBER 14 - FALL INTO BREAKFAST - Bagels, donuts, yogurt bar, juice.....you know breakfast is the most important meal of the day....now it's even more important, as the proceeds will help our neediest families. This fun UM-MSU prebreakfast made $589.37.

OCTOBER 27 - BOO GRAMS - Sending a Halloween treat to a friend for a modest sum garnered our charity cause $449. No trick here...it was a great treat.

OCTOBER 27 - QUARTER MANIA - have you ever been to one of these parties? They say they are a blast.Those who attended had fun and raised $714. A good time was had by all....especially those who won big!

NOVEMBER 7-30 - GIFT BASKET AUCTION ...Brought back in a new format, baskets generously donated by Pathology staff are being raffled - via a game of skill - for our patient families in need. Guess how many candies are in a jar and win tickets to spend on baskets. Our dedicated staff have again donated a fantastic array of 20 cool baskets....including MONEY, WINE, FIREPIT, GIFT CARDS...and many more items. Tickets (6 for $5) can be printed from here and taken to Bev Smith (M5221 Med Sci I) with your guesses and money. See baskets and descriptions online. The ticket sale ends Nov. 30. NOVEMBER 22- BAKE/CRAFT/ART SALE ...This annual bake sale is always held the Tuesday before Thanksgiving in Med Sci I, 5th floor and by the Pathology staff lounge in UMHS. Staff are encouraged to donate yummie baked goods and/or craft items for sale. This is always a hit, as many people buy their Thanksgiving desserts at this traditional bake sale.

DECEMBER 6 - HOLIDAY CRAFT/VENDOR SALE ....Our 2nd Annual Craft/Vendor sale will be held in the Towsley Lobby area on Dec. 6th from 9am - 4pm. We will host a fabulous array of local artists and vendors who donated a percentage from the sale of their wares to our charity. There will be GREAT holiday gift items for sale...with the added benefit of helping our patients with every purchase.

December - BUCKET BRIGADE....Our "Galens-like" buckets will be back. These holiday buckets are our last-ditch effort to collect money to help our neediest patients. Our fundraising efforts could use all your spare change, and greenbacks, too.

Blue Jeans - Every Friday of the Year!

The monies raised from ALL the above activities go directly to our neediest UMHS patient families. The Department of Social Work identifies families being treated here at the UMHS who are in significant financial need. We try hard to raise as many funds as we can to help those in need, while reaping the collateral benefit of working with very giving colleagues. We THANK ALL who help with any of our fundraisers. We appreciate your efforts very much.
