Made by “perennial favorite” quilter, Virginia Webber (Peggy
Otto’s mom), this beauty features a multitude of 1930s type print
fabrics. Bunnies abound, but you really need to take a closer look at
the other clever prints. The bright colors are sure to attract attention
and even though this quilt would be great anywhere, it would definitely
be smashing in a child’s room. Virginia is one of the foundation
quilters for our Departmental charity endeavors, and we are incredibly
grateful for this year’s terrific contribution.

Betty Ellestad of Williston, North Dakota made this incredible
quilt at the urging of her daughter, Tessa Marburger, who is a 4th year
UM medical student. Tessa saw our quilt raffle last year, thought it was
for a great cause and asked her mom to use her exceptional talent to help
us this year. Betty was more that willing to help with this charity effort
for University of Michigan hospital patients and has donated this gorgeous,
very intricate, custom quilted masterpiece. You really must take a close
look at the details (all the perfect points) and the beautiful quilting
job. The multi-colored floral border sets off the deep purple and tan
stars on the white internal field, while the yellowy-tan backing highlights
the superb, multi-faceted quilting. This is really a show piece –
a treasure that is sure to please everyone.
Size: 90 X 90

So, you say blue is your favorite color. Then this “Once
in a Blue Moon”quilt is for you. Sewn by Robin Kunkel (a true quilt
lover), the fabrics were chosen in Kansas City, as a family affair with
consultation from her artist mother, Betty Christian, and her color savvy
niece, Lauren Smith. The “Yellow Brick Road” pattern features
hues of blue, turquoise, green and yellow, in a variety of leafy, viney
and floral prints. The quilting continues the botanical theme, with a
repeating leaf pattern all over this queen size quilt. Three matching
pillows, made from the same blocks as those featured in the quilt, sweeten
the deal for the lucky winner.
Size: 94 X 102

Made by Teresa Usher, babysitter for Madeline Mahlmeister (daughter of
Peggy Mahlmeister of Microbiology and Roger Mahlmeister of Central Distribution),
this delightful “Trip Around the World” quilt features beautifully
bright coordinating colors (blue, green and orange) and whimsical frogs
with a light green back. A great baby or lap quilt - or terrific wall
hanging, this truly looks like the world with air, land, sea, sun, and
animals! It's clever pattern and great use of colors bring a smile to
your face. We really appreciate this donation from a “FOP”.…(Friend
of Pathology), and know it will be STP (Sure to Please).
Size: 50 X 55

This starry quilt is from a pattern called "Lucky Stars" by
Atkinson Designs and features Christmas red-and-green-patterned stars
that "float" in white snowflake blocks that are set off by more
Christmas reds and greens. The quilting features poinsettias and holly
leaves around each block with a holly leaf and berries in the center of
each star. The quilt is a collaborative donation that was pieced together
by Judith Green (Peds Infectious Diseases) and quilted by Liz Bowman (ULAM).
Virginia Vega-Warner (Peds Nephrology, related only by marriage to Roscoe
Warner of Pathology) and Karen Coulter (Elect Engineering & Computer
Science) helped out with donations of batting, fabric and enthusiastic
support! It is truly a striking quilt that celebrates the holiday season.
We are very grateful for this donation from lots of FOPs (Friends of Pathology)
but we especially thank Judith Greene for her generous spirit in giving
the quilt top.

Ever live in Minneapolis? Did your residency at Mayo? Have you vacationed
in Itasca State Park, or traveled to see Babe and the Blue Ox in Bemidji?
Perhaps you just like listening to Prairie Home Companion on NPR. If any
of these bring fond memories, then this beautiful “Minnesota Hotdish”
quilt is for you. Actually, even if you’re from sunny California
or the streets of Manhattan, you’re sure to love this gorgeous queen
sized quilt made and donated by Elizabeth Bowman in ULAM. The quilting
on this beauty resembles the eddies and ripples seen in ponds - it’s
a striking effect, and the illusion immediately makes you think of water.
It could easily be named “Land of the A Thousand Lakes.” It
features a light blue background, rich saphhire blue, olive green and
an interest print featuring swirling blues (again resembling water), and
falling leaves with gold outlines. There is a maroon batik border which
picks up some of the purple in the leaf print and it has a light blue
back. Liz is a professional long arm quilter (she has turned her quilting
passion into a successful small business and is happy to talk to anyone
about their quilting needs – she quilts for several people in Pathology).
We’re grateful that she has a big heart and has donated this spectacular
quilt for our patient charity raffle.
Size: 80 x 94

Made by Pathology’s own resident quilt queen, Mary Soucie (Surgical
Transcription), this gorgeous queen sized quilt was made especially for
our patient charity raffle. It is a beauty, and one that would look gorgeous
in a wide variety of rooms. Mary credits Tina Fields and Susan Ahrens
(both of IPOX) as her color consultants, and it is obvious that they did
a great job. This modified Irish Chain pattern is filled with rich hues
of green, gold, burgundy and rose with a splash of beautiful blues in
the center squares that make the whole quilt come alive. She has used
a blue print and burgundy sashing with corner green squares to finish
this quilt. The beautiful quilting can be appreciated on the back white
fabric, as it is done with a deep burgundy thread in an elegant, almost
fleur de lis pattern. The piecing is obviously done by an experienced
quilter, (you can tell that Mary is the quilting guru in Path’s
UMHS labs), as the seams and corners all match - no small feat with the
multitude of 2 inch squares. The fabrics are beautiful, from paisleys
to florals, and the use of lush, deep colors to create the design is exceptional.
Any room would look great with this quilt.

It’s easy to smile when viewing this great lap quilt by Mary Soucie
(Surgical Transcription). It’s red, blue and cream stars and stripes
are very patriotic, and would be great as a summer picnic blanket or a
wall hanging to celebrate July 4th. It would equally be terrific to cover
a little sleeping cowboy or cowgirl as the patchwork star fabric lends
a slightly western feel to this quilt. The quilting is done with a gold
thread in a looping star pattern, which is really showcased on the dark
blue backing fabric. It resembles a lasso rope and a sheriff’s star
badge…or a nighttime Western sky….or the crazy path of sparklers
and sky-rockets on Independence Day. However you interpret it, this quilt
is a sure winner and once again we are grateful for Mary’s generosity
of spirit and clever quilting ideas.

This lap quilt was also made and donated by Mary Soucie of Surgical Transcription.
It’s obvious that she loves to quilt and our patient charity raffle
is lucky to be the recipient of her passion. This quilt is a Double Four
Patch pattern and uses an especially clever mix of color and design to
create a very beautifully patterned piece. This very appealing throw looks
like a walk down a garden path with blues and deep pinks, florals and
a little couple seated on a garden bench in the white accent squares.
It is framed with a loden green paisley sashing and has a tiny rose colored
checked fabric on the back. The quilting is done in rose colored thread
and features a flowing pattern incorporating hearts over the entire quilt.
It would be perfect over the back of a sofa or better yet, by your favorite
chair to keep you warm while reading a good book this winter. Thank you,
once again, Mary for this great donation.

This quilt gives a whole new meaning to “Funky Chickens!”
This wonderfully whimsical chicken quilt was machine appliquéd
by experienced quilter Ellen Shereda. This quilt is done in crazy, bright
colors, with a soft green flannel for the back. Check out Ellen’s
attention to detail and the use of wild buttons for all of the eyes. Ellen
is a medical technologist at Providence Hospital and FOP (friend of Pathology)
through her best friend Pam Lincoln (Kunkel Lab). When she heard about
the Pathology fundraiser quilt event, she was very excited to be able
to contribute. If you have a place that needs to be livened up, this is
the quilt for you! CLUCK, CLUCK!!

Sonya Miller DeMonner, who is a Research Associate from the Department
of Veterans Affairs in the RJW Clinical Scholars Program, always intended
when she made this gorgeous “Quilted Village” quilt that it
go to raise funds for a worthy charity. We are incredible fortunate that
she found our cause and very grateful that she generously and enthusiastically
decided to donate it to our Pathology Patches for Patients drawing. The
rich jewel toned batik fabrics are arranged in a “quilted village”
pattern designed by Liz Schwartz and Stephen Seifert (published in the
Jan/Feb 2004 issue of Quilts with Style). Perrenial favorites, flying
geese, pinwheels, friendship stars, and sawtooth stars are just a few
of the block patterns that make up this queen sized beauty. The back fabric
is a very fun multicolored tiny dot pattern on white, while the binding
features a rich rainbow-hued batik which complements all the quilt colors.
The machine quilting (by Bernie Olszewski) is also wonderful, using multicolored
thread in an all over sunflower pattern, and is easily appreciated on
both the front and back. Over a banister, on a bed, showcased on a wall,
it would be spectacular anywhere. This quilt is absolutely stunning.

A tried and true Department of Pathology employee,
Cassandra Narvab of Surgical Transcription says that her buddy, Mary Soucie,
“tricked” her into taking up quilting. We aren’t sure
about that, but however it happened, we’re glad she did. Cassandra
is passionate about quilting and was “sooooo excited to be able
to contribute this year.” This quilt is definitely a classic beauty
and STP (sure to please). Cassandra has great color sense and immediately
her quilt evokes warm, comforting, inviting, friendly feelings. The black,
red and green floral sashings frame fifteen houses done in a multitude
of red, green, and yellow fabrics in the “neighborhood” on
this twin sized quilt. Each house has blue sky around it’s roof
(made with flying geese) and is framed with a cream colored window border.
The back fabric is cream with rich tans and highlights of rose arranged
in floral sprays. We very grateful for her generous spirit and know that
many people will appreciate this terrific donation. Tricked or not, we’re
grateful that Cassandra is a quilter!
Size: 60 x 76

QUILT 13
Talk about flying geese! This gorgeous “October Sky” quilt
by Rebecca Praznik of the Pathology Blood Bank captures the spirit of
fall perfectly. Becky started this queen/full sized quilt (made exclusively
for our patient charity raffle) in October, so to finish it in time for
the drawing, she enlisted the help of her mother, Ruby Dotson, to complete
the HAND QUILTING. There are beautiful maple leaves – with perfect
points - done in greens, browns and cream along with a full border of
triangles that look like pine trees made from beautiful oak and aspen
leaf fabric. The four Canadian geese (blanket-stitch appliquéd
in fabulous real life colors) fly across the quilt in front of four striking
half circle rays of browns and tans and cream. Did you notice that 2 have
their wings up and 2 have their wings down…it really looks like
they are heading south for the winter. Eight sawtooth stars with tan center
squares showcase Becky’s hand quilting in the shape of maple leaves
(any Toronto Maple Leaf fans out there?) It would be beautiful anywhere….a
great present for your favorite hunter or outdoor lover, at the lake,
on any bed, over a fireplace…(definitely in my living room!). This
is an absolutely gorgeous quilt with an amazing amount of work in it,
really an exceptional work of art. We are so grateful for Rebecca’s
generosity and willingness to share her incredible quilting talent to
benefit our patient charity.

QUILT 14
This remarkable “Christmas Cactus” wall hanging was donated
by Connie Lukacs, of Monroe, Michigan, who is the mom of our own Pathology
faculty member, Dr. Nick Lukacs. Mrs. Lukacs is a retired ER and ICU nurse
and has been quilting for about 15 years. It’s easy to see that
she is a master of this craft. Complete with a back rod pocket, this wall
hanging is just spectacular. If you have ever had a Christmas cactus you
know that they are an incredible plant, bursting into bloom with vivid
colors on cascading green succulent leaves just in time for the holidays.
This striking rendition evokes the same happy, vibrant feelings as does
the real plant. It features HAND appliquéd green paisley leaves
and bright red flowers over a tone on tone cream floral fabric –
honestly you cannot see how the flowers and leaves are sewn on. The back
fabric is a tiny black on white floral. As striking as the front center
floral medallion is, perhaps even more incredible is that the entire piece
is HAND QUILTED with TINY stitches in parallel lines just one half inch
apart.
This is the kind of incredible workmanship that quilt collectors
prize. We are sincerely grateful for this wonderful donation, and are
lucky that Nick has some pull with his mom…..doesn’t it seem
like moms always come through for their kids, no matter how old they are?
Great to display all year round, anyone would be fortunate to win this
exceptional work of art.
