Springtime Butterflies
78 x 100 inches
Full/Queen
Made by the ladies of the Poke and Stab quilt group of St. Thomas A Beckett Catholic Church in Canton, MI., the donation of this gorgeous hand-appliqued quilt was facilitated by Pam Lincoln, who works in the Kunkel Lab in Pathology (and is the leader of this quilt group). This is the first of 4 quilts that Pam was involved in for this year's raffle. 63 colorful butterflies, made from reproduction 30's material of every hue flit and fly on a white field. Two pale green borders frame these ephemeral insects. The back is pale green flowers. Liz Bowman custom quilted this with hearts surrounding each butterfly. A spectacular quilt. |

Big Ten
70 x 86 inches
(Generous twin, Full)
What can 7 ladies do with lots of colored fabric in only 6 hours on a fall Saturday afternoon (actually while the UM-Penn State game was on BTN on the plasma TV)? If you answered: "Make the 2nd annual Big Ten quilt," then you're right. But there was also lots of chatting, lunching, tutorials on how to use a brand new sewing machine, and especially lots of laughing as Pam Lincoln, Liz Bowman, Judith Green, Judith Connett, Virginia Vega-Warner, Vidya Sarma and Robin Kunkel joined forces to make this fabulous quilt. Ellen Shered was there in spirit. The middle logos were appliqued by Pam and Liz did her famous quilting job when the quilt went home with her at the end of the day. ANY Big Ten fan will love this quilt. It is very cool. |

Amazing Winter
30 x 30 inches
Wall hanging
Yuki Ito (wife of visiting fellow, Hiro Ito, in the Kunkel lab of Pathology) has immersed herself in American culture during their stay here, including learning how to quilt. This is a stunning example of her fabulous hand work, and we are very fortunate that she has donated it. This beautiful red and white wall hanging celebrates winter with a HAND EMBROIDERED middle panel filled with springs of winter flora. It is accented with 3D petals and pearls, and shiny crystals, and titled "Winter" in beautiful red satin stiches. Stars and nine patches in a variety of reds and whites frame the outer edges of this gorgeous wall hanging. It is an exceptional piece....even if you aren't a winter-lover, it would be the perfect home decoration. It just makes you happy to look at it. A perfect way to fill your house with cheer during our gray months of winter. |

Diamonds on Black
70 x 94 inches
Full/Queen
Inspired by a quilt made by one of Liz Bowman's clients, this homage to classic Amish quilts features diamonds of very plain fabrics in rich blue, magenta, green and red on a black field, framed by a deep gold and outer black border. Robin Kunkel, who made this quilt for our raffle, has always loved the Amish-style of quilting, where saturated colors and shape play an important role in the overall feelng of the quilt. This quilt reminds us of the incredible history of quilting in the US with it's rather simply pieced pattern. However, this is not your granny's quilt, as Liz Bowman's quilting makes it very jazzy, modern, fun, and striking. She uses bright varigated primary colored thread in an overall loping feather pattern to make this simple quilt exude flair. The back is an awesome soft flannel, of hour-glass shaped colors on black. This quilt would be great on a bed, over a sofa, or on a wall. Old meets new and comes out nifty.

Undercover in Houston II
66 x 78 inches
Very generous lap/twin
Connie Lukacs, talented mom of Professor Nick Lukcas in Pathology, has again donated a beautiful quilt for our charity raffle. Connie was an emergency room nurse, however, she now spends her retirement giving aid and comfort to others with her quilting talents. We are indeed fortunate and grateful that she had donated this beautiful rose, ochre yellow, green and mauve quilt with Asian-inspired fabrics to our raffle. The diagonal stripes alternated between green stars on a yellow field with rose squares on a Asian focus fabric field filled with cranes and fans, iris and chrysanthemums. The back is a rich blue-green and a clever over all quilt pattern resembling a peacock finishes off this beautiful quilt. |

Susan Gardner, mother of Sara Williams, Pathology Research Administrative Assistant, made this beauty, and we are very fortunate that she donated it to our cause. The yellow criss-crossed rails highlight the sawtooth edged green half square trianges. There is also a sunshine feel to this quilt. It would be great on a bed, over a sofa, or on a wall. |

Star Crossed
90 x 106 inches
Generous queen/King
This is one big quilt! 100 different fabrics that went into making the 1600+ pieces in this quilt. The center 20 blocks feature 64 pieces each, as gold and dark blue batik fabric frames intertwine around a light blue star. If M.C. Escher was a quilter, he might have designed something like this, but it was Robin Kunkel who fell in love with the pattern and made it for our raffle. Light blue stars connect the squares, which are bordered by a thin dark blue and a larger light blue border. Light blue stars floating on the same cream fabric as in the middle complete the quilt. The same cream fabric on the back features small, cream flowers. Actually, what really completes this quilt is Liz Bowman's incredible custom quilting. She has made this essentially a reversible quilt as the back is a "whole cloth" quilt....where a piece of plain fabric is extensively and intricately custom quilted, so that it is beautiful even without any piecing. All of the 54 stars are outlined, there is a row of double free-handed feathers on the outer border, and each rectangle has a fantastic individual quilting pattern. This one will keep you warm in style. |

Sugar and spice and everything nice describes this quilt made by Pam Lincoln. Five pink gingham 3D bows on ribbons span a yellow field, surrounded by a pink and yellow old English rose border. It is bound with pink gingham and there are adorable little bunnies with pink ears hopping across the very soft pale green flannel back. A yellow bow with long ribbons sits in the bottom right corner to add spice to this quilt fit for a princess. Liz Bowman has added her special touch by custom quilting each section. Baby Sew-Fari Quilt
40 x 42 inches
Wall hanging / Crib/ Lap
Beverly Adkins of Howell, MI was visiting the UMHS last year when her sister was a patient, and saw our quilt raffle display. She asked how she could donate a quilt to our cause. Were we ever lucky! She delivered on her request with this incredibly cute wall hanging/child's quilt. Actually, if you have a "jungle" game room, it would be perfect there, as it is one of the cutest quilts we have ever seen. 6 jungle animals are appliqued onto a light blue background and framed with many bright colors (including leopard print pink and purple). Chenille embellishments create the ears, eyebrows, stripes, and tails for an incredibly cute and fuzzy effect! Bev has hand embroiderd the details of their faces, and palm trees sit appliqued in three corners. It is all framed by a multicolored patchwork border, and a wild jungle print filled with animals is used on the back. Lucky is the person who wins this one. |

Four Corners
22 x 49 inches
Table runner, wall hanging
Melissa Liebart, in the Pathology Chemistry lab, mentioned to her quilter neighbor, Jeani Barsantee, that Pathology held an annual charity quilt raffle. Jeani, in the very generous, giving spirt common to quilters, has donated three items. We are very grateful for her giving spirit. This is a wonderful blue table runner - or it could easily be a dresser scarf or a wall hanging. The four corners pattern uses alternating light and dark blue to build increasingly larger squares. The back is a light blue flowered print, and she has quilted it in navy with an overall stippled pattern. It reminds one of the delft blue color scheme seen in pottery from Holland....very classic....it would look great on a dining room table. |

Cats in the Garden
60 x 82 inches
Twin/full
Elizabeth Rodriguiz, in Biological and Material Sciences in the Dental School, saw our quilt display last year, and left a note saying that she would like to donated a quilt next year. Even though she was moving, she found time to make this terrific bright and happy quilt. Are we ever grateful that she did. The pattern uses blocks called Octagon and Twist (available at quilterscache.com), and Liz has made it using bright fabrics in pink, magenta, blue, turquise, and green. The focus of the quilt, the center octagonal "snowballs" will delight any cat lover, as the fabric features many different kinds of kitties surrounded by a garden of flowers. The outer border is pieced three rows wide from hand-dyed material in pinks, magentas and oranges that Liz dyed herself. She comes by this quilting prowess honestly, as she was the past president of the Greater Ann Arbor Quilters Guild. This is a very cheery, happy, striking quilt....sure to delight the lucky winner. |

There are multicolored dogs and ducks, cows and kittens, turtles and lambs, bunnies and kids.....perfect for your favorite kid! Using reprodution 30s material in many bright colors, Pam alternated four patch and pinwheel blocks to fill out the quilt. The perfect corners and points make this quilt a real heirloom quality work of art. The back is a warm and fuzzy turquise flannel with - what else - baby animals. Liz finished it off with another of her wonderful custom quilting jobs. This quilt would be the perfect baby gift, or a wonderful nursery wall hanging...a very special "blankie." |

M Go Blue
81 x 99 inches
Queen
The piecing of this UM extravaganza was a collaborative effort by Pam LIncoln (who designed this pattern) and Robin Kunkel (a transplanted Wolverine). Pam swallowed her Spartan pride and appliqued all the double block Ms, while Robin made all the Go Blue (and Maize) stars. There are at least 6 type of UM fabric in this queen sized quilt. Horizontal rail fence blocks alternate with the 20 block Ms, while verticle maize, blue and white rail fences alternate with 12 stars. Liz Bowman provided incredible custom quilting....by writing "M go Blue" all along the outer border and "U of M" across all the rail fence blocks. There is even a "winged helmet" with 2007 in the lower right corner. We are in a science field....so following in daVinci's footsteps, if you hold a mirror to the back you can read all of the Meeeechigan quilting. A great quilt for any UM fan. GO BLUE!! |

Hail to the Victors
78 x 80 inches
Full/queen
Kristin Schultz, a Pediatrics resident (and related by marriage to Jon Cutlan, a Pathology resident) has donated this "fan"tastic UM quilt. Made from 29 tee shirts, donated by The MDen and Moe's, she has made a terrific homage to the Maize and Blue tradition. "Amaizingly" and very generously, Lloyd Carr, head football coach, has signed the quilt, and even drew up a play....looks like a handoff to Mike Hart to us....better not let OSU see our quilt! The long arm quilting, in a pattern that resembles the markings on a volleyball, was donated by Bernie O at "Long Arm Lines and Loops." This quilt has some classic tee shirts - no doubt collector's items, from 2004 thru the 2007 Rose Bowl. A tiny little tag with the words to "Hail to the Victors" is sewn on the blue UM fabric back. Homespun Comfort
42 x 68 inches
Lap
Beverly Schumann, Administrative Assistant in Pathology, loves historical Civil War quilting and the feel of country, homey, soft, inviting fabrics. She has made us one of her recent "rag" quilts, and we can understand how inviting it would be to curl up under this beauty. It just exudes friendliness. She tells us that In the small town of Michigamme located in the western part of the U.P., there is a quaint little quilt shop named Country Garden Quilts and More. While camping this last summer Bev visited this quilt shop and
bought an array of homespun fabrics to make this primitive rag quilt. This is the type of lap blanket that is perfect for curling up in an overstuffed recliner with a good book!! Doesn't it sound inviting! |

Go Blue Sue
72 x 94 inches
Generous Twin/Full
There once was a girl named Sue,
Who had a bonnet that was blue,
She played on a plain
Of azure Irish chain,
And said, "Have I got a quilt for you!"
This quilt was the result of brainstorming after Liz Bowman embroidered 6 adorable Sunbonnet Sue panels in blue on white (commonly known as blue work). Thinking these enduring images would make a very cute quilt, Pam Lincoln suggested the classic Irish Chain pattern. Robin Kunkel gathered all her blue fabric (her parents, sister and niece helped find more blues in Kansas City) and voila...this blue patchwork using 2 inch squares was made. Liz finished it off with exceptional custom quilting, filling in the white rectangles with daisies and leaves, and running a beautiful row of double leaves in the wide outer blue border, while a single row of curls and leaves adorn the light and dark blue double checkerboard border. The back light blue daisy fabric is perfect to showcase the wonderful quilting. This would be a great quilt for any 'blue" lover...or anyone who fondly remembers Sunbonnet Sue. |

Mermaids
60 x 90 inches
Mermaids was donated by Ellen Shereda (FOP, Friend of Pathology) and is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Ellen has donated to us for the last few years as well as being a part of the group that made the Big Ten quilt last year. Who doesn’t love Disney and especially Ariel, the Little Mermaid? This beautiful under the sea extravaganza is just crying out for some lucky little girl to take it home. The brilliant tones of blue, aqua and purple evoke memories of the sparkling sea and the fabric actually has sparkles on it! All of Ariel’s little friends are there with her too. Liz Bowman used a bubbles pattern to keep up with the underwater theme; Perfect. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, you know, “Darling it’s better down where it’s wetter, under the sea…” turn it over and look at the back. More mermaids! Perhaps Ariel would not have wanted to leave the sea if she had friends like those found on the back of this sea gem. It is full of beautiful little mermaid girls and their little friends too. Some special little girl in your life needs to take this one home! |

Crazy Christmas
42 x 51inches
She’s at it again. Ellen Shereda generously donated this quilt she aptly entitled Crazy Christmas. This is Ellen’s third quilt donation to us this year (one of her other ones was in the Pathology Art Action). If you like folk art this is the quilt for you. Ellen was quite creative with this one. We took a class together to learn how to piece curves but she took hers one step further and cut her curved blocks into more pieces. The result is this amazing lap quilt. She is crazy like a fox in designing this one. The fabrics contain angels, sheep, deer, hearts and stars just to name a few. The front is beautiful but the back is no slacker either. She took the remainder of the fabrics from the front and made a fantastic patchwork back. Quilted by Liz Bowman to enhance the quilt she used a wonderful snowflake design that makes you remember cozy, snow-filled days in the company of the ones you love. Take this one out for the holiday and I bet no one will want you to put it away! |

If your passion is blue and yellow this is the quilt for you. Donated by our own Mary Soucie, of surgical transcription, she, and has been a long time donor to our quilt raffles. Mary is an inspiration to all of us in the quilt community. This blue and yellow extravaganza is full of wonderful movement. From the spinning stripes to the pinwheel stars you are reminded of the illusion of movement everywhere your eyes land. The quilting is a swirly pattern that just enhances the quilts natural movement and it shows up just beautifully on the luscious cream backing fabric. The fabrics are a combination of many fabulous blues and yellows. Can’t you just imagine this quilt in a French provincial style bedroom? Maybe yours.

Autumn Stars

Autumn Stars, donated by Cassandra Narvab truly captures the splendor of autumn. This quilt is reminiscent of leaves tumbling to the ground in the middle of autumn. Cassandra has truly outdone herself with this one. Her choice of fabric reinforces the theme of rich autumn colors. The stars just seem to twinkle and glow with the light of the autumn sky. The back of this beauty is a beautiful as the front. Large sweeping flowers grace the palest of yellow background of the fabric used for the back of the quilt. The quilting design of vining leaves continues the movement of the tumbling stars from the front to the swirl of elegant flowers on the back. This quilt is a stunning autumn beauty and sure to make some lucky winner very happy. |

The colors of red and black are really striking. Lindsay did a wonderful job with this quilt and she quilted it herself. She has even put a sleeve on the back for hanging. Japanese Fans
38 x 38 inches
This is the second quilt donated to us by Kathryn Sporer and it is a stunner. Made from elegant Japanese fabric this quilt sings of Japan’s beauty. The pieced fan blocks compliment the Asian fabric perfectly. The fans and the border are an elegant Asian fabric done in the sumptuous colors of teals, greens and purples. You can see the fan design repeated in the fabric as well as the cherry blossom and my personal favorite, the cranes. The cream background fabric has a distinct Asian flare too reminiscent of a slice of exotic fruit or perhaps a lady’s parasol. The fans literally dance across the field of cream mimicking the fan dance or the flight of the crane. The back is made with the same wonderful cream fabric where the outline quilting continues the fan pattern. So elegant and so chic. Warm Autumn Day

It’s not a mystery any more! What began as a Mystery quilt is all done and it is gorgeous. Thanks to Bonnie Bergman it is now a part of our raffle. Bonnie is the mom of Lindsay Schmidt, a Pathology resident that also donated a quilt to our raffle. The choice of fabrics for this quilt makes it something special. They are also Civil War reproduction fabrics. The warm and inviting browns and russets are reminiscent of a beautiful autumn day. You can just imagine a soldier’s wife making something like this to keep him comfy and warm. You may want to look closely and notice that there is a secondary design of a star formed with the browns in this beauty. Another interesting design element is the way that the small blocks continue into the border. This is the perfect quilt to cuddle up with on a crisp fall day. |

Rebecca Praznik of the Blood Bank here at the University of Michigan has really out done herself with this elegant quilt aptly entitled “Christmas Day.” All of your favorite Christmas themes are represented in the fabrics Rebecca chose for her saw tooth stars and her flying geese border. If you pay close attention you may be able to see the saw tooth star design element repeated in the border. Like those ads on TV say but wait, there’s more. Included with this wonderful quilt is a hand stitched and hand quilted pillow to match! Both the quilt and the pillow have matching back fabric of vibrant holly leaves and berries. This generous donation invokes the spirit of Christmas right now. |

Huron River Vies
28 x 38 inches
For the second year we are the recipients of a beautiful wall hanging from Robin Hess, wife of our department chairman. Entitled Huron River Views the scene depicted is a view of the Huron River as seen from Robin’s own home. It is simply stunning. Imagine a brisk autumn day where the leaves have turned color and the river is shining. Appliqued swans float piecefully down the river and the kayaker is hoping to see them u close. Robin did all the quilting by hand and it really enhances the pieced portions of the quilt. The piecing, appliqué and quilting are fantastic. This is a beautiful work of art and would look amazing on a wall in your home. |

Windmills
This beautiful pink and purple quilt was generously donated by Patricia Morrow, wife of our own Administrative Manager, Tom Morrow. The 42 alternating pink and purple windmill squares each have a square of complementary flowered fabric in the center. All the squares are framed in green and a large deep green border enhances the garden look of this quilt. All the squares resemble pink and purple flowers, perhaps cosmos, blowing in the garden breeze, giving alot of motion to this quilt. Pat has done her own beautiful long-arm quilting with variegated thread in purple, rose, and orange hues. This is a striking quilt, perfect for the garden lover, or your favorite pink and purple girl. |
