Photos of the quilts are displayed below. Prepare to be "amaized". (Click on the thumbnails below to see details.) NOTE: In many cases the photos do not do the quilts justice. If some of the quilts appear jagged at the bottom it is because they were folded right before they were photographed, and it is just a crease in the quilt. They are all truly wonderful.

Winner: Marlene Czerwick (she MADE quilt #2)

This wild child quilt was made and generopusly donated by Joan Watson (see also #3), a member of the General Henry Dearborn Quilting Society. The corner four patches in green, red, teal and yellow coordinated with the the ribbons, and the gold and black borders frame it perfectly. This quilt is ready to party....we know the winner will be thrilled. We are very grateful for this wild child quilt.

Winner: Phillip Park
(This UM undergrad junior Neuroscience major bought his ticket in the MSI glass connector hallway. He plays in the UM Marching Bank, so he was thrilled to win the Big Ten quilt).
76 x 95 inches
What can 5 friends do on a fall Saturday morning? Make this great 3rd Annual Big Ten quilt for the charity raffle, of course! All 11 schools are featured in friendship star blocks, with one block for the Big Ten. Yuki Ito, Judith Connett, Liz Bowman, Pam Lincoln and Robin Kunkel (with moral and financial support from Vidya Sarma and Ellen Shereda) had a blast making this great quilt. They were able to do it in ~4 hours (as Pam had pre-cut all the blocks into “kits,” and the center logo of each school had been pre-appliqued by Liz and Pam.) The quilting group found out that it wasn't exactly idiot-proof, but it was definitely fun putting it together. All the blocks were sewn and rows assembled before lunch was served and the wine was opened. Luckily, Liz took it home to custom quilt all the individual school’s fight cheer on each block with footballs on the deep blue border. The back is a warm blue flannel. This is a great quilt for a Big Ten fan.

So….Liz Bowman can piece as well as quilt. And she is as generous as she is talented. This terrific gold and green quilt features a wonderful optical illusion pattern. It looks like there are light colored circles interlocking all over the quilt. In reality, there are no curved pieces at all. What you’ll notice, however, upon closer investigation, is Liz’s beautiful piecing technique with great points and matching seams. A black border and beautiful all over quilting finishes this really rich fall quilt. |

Winner: Linda Bellmore
92 x 103 inches
This BIG (either queen or king) blue lone star quilt with 288 little diamonds was made by Robin Kunkel and quilted by Liz Bowman. The custom quilting is exceptional and extensive. The blue, green and purple batik fabrics were purchased in Lawrence, KS (Rock Chalk, Jayhawk) with help from Lisa, Lauren and Brent Smith and Betty and Chris Christian (a terrific team of artistic color consultants!). The lone star is special to Robin as she has several from North Dakota, home of her husband, UM Med Sch Associate Dean Steve Kunkel. Her mother-in-law, Julie, has given her several made by the Lakota Indians. Star quilts are used by the Lakota at “Giveaways” as a way to celebrate the life of a departed loved one. Robin hopes this lone star will bring pleasure to the winner and raise much money for a family who could use a little help at this time. |

What is black and white and red all over? This contemporary quilt made by Robin Kunkel, of course. This Turning Twenty pattern uses lots of black on white and white on black fabrics (courtesy of Robin’s mom, Betty Christian) as well as some striking red fabrics. Zebras and cherries, dragonflies, and jacks, are set in two big black diamonds and a red and black zigzag on a white field. Liz Bowman quilted a fantastic pattern in red thread, featuring a celtic knot in each of the diamonds. This striking pattern will be great in any contemporary home, and since the back is a white on white fabric, the red quilting makes for essentially a reversible quilt…..you get two for the price of one! |

This gorgeous quilt was made by Tina Roth and quilted by Mary Jo Freitas, and donated by the C.A.A.D.Y. Corner Quilters. We were definitely “Rejoicing” when Mary Randolph (related by marriage to Jim Randolph of UM’s DRDA) called to ask about our charity raffle. She and her wonderful local quilting group, the C.A.A.D.Y. Corner Quilters, were very interested in ensuring that this quilt went to a cause that was serious in helping people, and we are grateful that they entrusted us with this wonderful donation. This is a spectacular quilt, which features many vignettes of Christmas and winter, many of them very cleverly embellished. The snow lady is wearing a real cameo necklace and gold-toned earrings, while the snowman sports black button sunglasses. The Christmas goose has a button eye and Santa has fantastic buckles on his boots (someone sacrificed great silver and black earrings here). A bowl of fruit, a Christmas tree, a gorgeous red poinsettia, ornaments, a bell, a wrapped gift and stars galore all decorate this quilt. It’s all tied up with a huge 3D red bow on top of the word Rejoice, with holly in the bottom corners of the dark blue border. The back is a dark green whole cloth with a pocket for hanging. This is a fantastic quilt, and we are so grateful to have it in our raffle. Some lucky winner will enjoy a wonderful holiday heirloom.

Looking at Lindsay’s cherry quilt is the perfect way to make anyone smile. It is guaranteed to brighten your day. This is an incredibly appealing quilt, which we are very pleased to be able to raffle for our charity. This is a big, beautiful quilt full of different 3.5 inch fabric squares in 19 x 20 rows (380 total squares). It is very fun to look at all the fabrics used in this quilt and imagine where they all came from. There are batiks and calicos, florals and stripes, checks and adorable bunny prints. This quilt would be a wonderful quilt in any bedroom. This very generous friend of Pathology will make 5 lucky people happy when they win her quilts, and will no doubt help to raise lots of funds for some of the neediest patients at the UM hospital.

Camille Mrozowski in the Medical School’s Office of Research has donated this wonderful “Michigan Summer” quilt. She says that it was really her mother who was the quilter in the family, but in her case, it must be an inheritable trait. It was quilted by Elizabeth Bowman. Camille says that many quilters are also gardeners or involved in some outdoor activity. The seasonal changes in Michigan and its diverse natural environment give quilters many ideas for inspiration. This quilt incorporates the colors of summer gardens and the pinwheels reflect the playfulness of summer outings. We are so appreciative of Camille’s generosity and creativity, and know that some lucky winner will delight in this Michigan summer quilt.

We are fortunate, indeed, to have from Beth Minors, Adminstrative assistant to Dr. Jeffrey Myers in Anatomic Pathology, this adorable Jack ‘O Lantern quilt. PERFECT for Halloween, this pumpkin quilt is extremely cute. Nine different orange fabrics are used to make the jack ‘o lanterns. Beth chose light yellow fabrics to make the “faces” which makes them shine, just as if candle light was flickering from within. The striped triangles on the outer frame make a fantastic candy corn border. The back fabric is filled with spooky spider webs, and this quilt immediately makes you want it to be Halloween just so that you can display it. This quilt is definitely a treat….the only tricks here are Beth’s great quilting skills. We are so grateful for her generous donation.

Adorable, truly adorable! Kristin Cutlan (see #41 above) has also donated this incredibly cute Zoo Babies quilt. Can you say cute, cuddly, fuzzy, soft, and fun….it’s all here in one 9 patch quilt. Done in soft hues of green, loden, brown, cream, tan, there is a baby giraffe, monkey, lion, elephant and alligator…(or is it a crocodile?) appliquéd and embellished with fuzzy fur. They alternate with large squares of soft plush fabric, and the back is made with the softest of the soft, Minky fabric, perfect for a tiny baby to lie on. This will be a wonderful gift for your favorite little person. Baby quilts are always popular, as parents and grandparents both love them. This one will certainly be one to pass down thru the generations. Thanks to Kristin for her generous contributions.
