We are extremely grateful for the generousity of our quilting community. They are a very talented and giving group. A veritable feast for the eyes and one of the best quilts shows around will be right here in our Department of Pathology to benefit some of the UM hospital's neediest patient families. We are infinitely grateful to our quilters for the wonderful donations. They are all very special. See a legal sized thumbnail of all 30 quilts here.

#1 - Winner: Dianna Miller, Admin. Asst. in Neurosurgery
What can 5 friends do on a fall Saturday morning? Make this great 4th Annual Big Ten quilt for the charity raffle, of course! All 11 schools are featured in sawtooth star blocks, with one block for the Big Ten in this 84 x 107 inch quilt. Yuki Ito, Judith Connett, Liz Bowman, Pam Lincoln and Robin Kunkel had a blast making this great quilt. In fact, it was so much fun they decided to made two quilts....one for Yuki to take home to Japan next year. They were able to do it in ~4 hours (as Pam had pre-cut all the blocks into “kits,” and the center logo of each school had been pre-appliqued by Liz and Pam.) The quilting group found out that it wasn't exactly idiot-proof, but it was definitely fun putting it together. All the blocks were sewn and rows assembled before lunch was served and the wine was opened. Luckily, Liz took it home to custom quilt all the individual school’s fight cheer on each block with footballs on the deep blue border. The back is a warm blue flannel. This is a great quilt for any Big Ten fan.

#2 - Winner: Ashley Bale - Works in Outpatient CT
This beauty was pieced, quilted and generously donated by Elizabeth Bowman (ULAM). This BIG Bali Batik Wonder is 80 x 98 inches. The rich colors are fantastic, and the optical illusion of the dark navy rectangle linking the 4 other colors together is very M.C. Escher-esque. Liz's work as a long arm quilter extraordinare can be seen in many (7) of the quilts in this year's show. See other example's of her work on her website...http://www.lizscustomquilting.com/. We are VERY grateful for Liz's generous quilting spirit.

#3 - Winner: Georganna Cartwright
Made, quilted and generously donated by Karen Bracken of Pathology Administration, this Star Spangled Goodness is 78 x 99 inches. A variation on an Irish chain, this very striking and beautifully made red, white and blue quit is bordered and backed with a light blue striped fabric. There are LOTS of 1.75 inch squares which make up the pattern of this patriotic quilt. Queen bed sized it features a red center, surrounded by graded blues. Karen's quilting skill is matched only by her generousity.

#4 -Winner: Charles Boyer, CVC patient, UM fan & alumni, Go Blue!
Made by the ladies of the St. Thomas A. Beckett Catholic Parish in Canton, MI., designed by Pam LIncoln of Pathology Research and quilted by Liz Bowman, this BIG block M string quilt is sure to appeal to Wolverine fans. The central block M sits on a huge field of blue, and each square is quilted with the famous block M logo. At 80 x 90, it would easily fit a queen bed, and make any UM fan/student/alumni proud.

#5 Winner: Cinda Hocking - was visiting a friend in UM hospital, was a UM Social Worker for 17 years
Made by Judith Connett of Pathology Research and quilted by Liz Bowman, this amazing kaleidascope quilt is a "Jungle Hide and Seek." 72 x 96 inches are filled with wonderful hexagons that used to be jungle fabric.....now they are stars of jungle wonder. There is one mistake, made intentionally (as with quilting tradition to let any evil spirits escape, although, believe me, it's a miracle if you can find it)! The orange batik border features fantastic animal quilting, and the back has a stripe of the original fabric. Known in quilting circles as a "stack and whack" or a "one block wonder," the center section is made from just one fabric which Judith included a section of on the back. There is nothing whacky about this quilt, just gorgeous. Exceptional! No doubt this will be a true heirloom for some lucky winner.

#6 Winner: Paula Goforth- Research Investigator in Pharmacology (BSRB)
Made by Julie Kovach, wife of UM Pathology faculty, Rich Lieberman, and a physician herself, as the Director of Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at the Detroit Medical Center, and beautifully quilted by Robyn House-Guettler, this gorgeous purple quilt features a dozen fluttering butterflies. It is an homage to her daughter Allyson's Mixed Company singing group at Yale University. Julie's quilt "Song of Purple Summer," was inspired by their rendition of "Purple Summer." Listen to this link of the song...it's just as beautiful as the proud mom's quilt. The generous donation of these 75 x75 inches of beauty certainly shows Julie's big heart.

#7Winner: Eileen Putnam, Pathology Hematology
Facilitated by Mary Randolph, (wife of past UM DRDA Director, Jim Randolph) who is a member of the C.A.A.D.Y. Corner Quilters, this gorgeous quilt was made by Pat Kraska and quilted by Jo Freitas. Its 66 x 84 inches make it full/queen sized, and the expert construction and quilting definitely make it heirloom quality. We are so grateful for this donation, and know whoever wins it will be thrilled.

#8Winner: Lisa Roeser, bought in Mott to support the cause
This clever "Christmas Morning" quilt was made by an anonymous friend of Melissa Liebaert (Pathology Chemistry Lab). Actually, this is the first of SIX quilts that Melissa's friend donated. Are we ever lucky....and so grateful. This stack of beautiful packages is tied with a real red satin bow at the top, and would be perfect for the Christmas season. 62 x 80 inches with gorgeous gold holly and ribbon quilting is sure to bring holiday cheer.

#9 Winner: Karen Chartier, Med. Asst in CVC
Another very impressive quilt donated by the anonymous friend of Melissa Liebaert (Pathology Chemistry Lab) is this green and red star. Green and white pinwheels anchor the corners and a large red and green star, made of log cabin blocks is the center focus. This has a very traditional quilting feel. Its 68 x 68 inches make it a great large statement wall hanging or a sofa throw or a twin bed quilt. However it is used, this is a gorgoeous quilt.

#10 Winner: Richard Miller, Pathology Faculty
We think it looks like cherry lemonade, but Liz Rodriguiz, the past President of the Greater Ann Arbor Area Quilt Guild (GAAQG) who works in the UM Dental School, told us that her inspiration for this gorgeous, bright, fun 73 x 95 inch quilt came when she was taking a water color painting class. She was using yellow and green and then splashed a thin line of bright red on the canvas. Voila....an idea for a quilt was born. LOTS of little squares make up this impressionist quilt, and the backing material of pink and red roses on a yellow background is perfect. It's definitely a masterpiece....reminds you of a cool glass of cherry lemonade in summer! Thanks AGAIN to Liz for donating to our charity quilt show. Her quilts are always inspirational.

#11 Winner: Cassie Clark, Mom of Mott patient
Jeanne Neuhoff (Pathology Chemistry Lab) is an avid quiter and a frequent donor to our quilt show. She says that she enjoyed making this "scrappy" Doubletime Duet quilt as it's 60 76 inches were so bright and happy. We know who ever wins it will be doubly happy, as they'll get a great quilt, and also know that they helped some families at the UM hospital who needed some cheer. This great quilt reminds us of a basket weave....so appropriate for a charity donation quilt....as we're all interconnected. Thanks to Jeanne for reminding us in such a clever, fun way.

#12 Winner: Jesusa Powlison
Yet AGAIN, our very own Pathology Clinical Lecturer, Lindsay Schmidt, has donated an extremely cute, fun quilt. She calls this bright lime green and hot pink quilt, "Twelve LIttle Monkeys Jumping on the Bed." It could also easily be named Monkey in the Middle! A fantastic child's quilt, it's 46 x 57 size is perfect for naps.

#13 Winner: Yali Dou, Pathology Faculty
This bright turquois quilt was our first donation, given to us after the 2008 quilt show. Made by Deb Yonkoski of the UMHS Patient Nutrition Services, she credits the Story Quilt design as being from The Modern Quilt Workshop by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr. Deb originally made this toddler/napping size quilt (50 x 72 inches) for her grand daughter, but since she had fabric left over, she decided to make it again and put them to good use a second time. We are so grateful she chose to donate this clever quilt to us. When asked "How does it works?", Deb explained, "So, you start at any square and make up an oral story that incorporates the pictures as you follow the lines from square to square. "There once was a bird named Sammy who lived in the jungle. One day, he flew out of the jungle and came to a house with a window. He looked in the window and saw a dinosaur! The dinosaur.....etc. When I made one for my grand daughter, I embedded two stories about her parents. Her father, my son, has a younger brother. When they were children, the older brother teased the younger one until the younger one hit him in the ankle with a baseball bat. The older brother was so mad he sawed the aluminum baseball bat in half. My daughter-in-law rode down the stairs as a child in a laundry basket the day before the family went to Disneyworld. She broke her ankle so it was serendipity that their stories in the quilt crossed at the ankle squar/picture. I was ecstatic when I finally found fabric with a laundry basket. Anyway, it was fun." Fun for sure....for any lucky winner...perfect for grandparents' house!

#14 Winner: Joann McDaniel, EAA patient, works in UM School of Art & Design
This very beautiful yellow brick road pattern quilt was made and generously donated by the wife of one of our Pathology faculty members. She wishes to remain anonymous, but we are so grateful for this terrific yellow and blue quilt. It looks very French country-ish. Little checks, hints of green and fields of flowers, including blue roses on a yellow field, are complimented by the lovely yellow rose border. It's 62 x 80 inch size make it a perfect twin or full size.

#15 Winner: Samantha Zech, Nursing Student
This plush, puffy, very high loft baby quilt (Baby Go Blue) was made by Robin Kunkel of Pathology Research. It's 6 inch pale yellow and soft pale blue check squares are made from "Minkie" the softest chinchilla fur-like material....perfect for a baby nap. It is hand tied with blue embroidery thread at each corner, and backed with more super soft blue plush fabric. What, you say there are no babies at your house.....at 33 x 50 inches it would also be a terrific dog bed!

#16 Winner: Tiffany Peters, Transplant Data Specialist
This fun 53 x 66 inch child's quilt was the third quilt made by Melissa Liebaert's friend. She has taken pink, purple, yellow and orange gingham checks and fashioned whirling pinwheels and multicolored hexagons. All this motion is framed by three borders of purple, pink and yellow. White swirls of curls are used to quilt this great quilt.

#17 Winner: Tracie Sobchik, Pathology Histotechnologist
This very cool, peaceful, harmonious quilt is made by Bonnie Mae Bergman, who shares her love of quilting with her daughter in Pathology, Lindsay Schmidt (see quilt #12). Her "Dreaming of Dawn" quilt is 42 x 53 inches and would be a great wall hanging or throw. The dark brown bird in the middle sits amid a field of patchwork done in teal, tan, gray, and light blue. Queen Anne's lace, grasses, below and dreamy clouds above make this quilt a beauty. We are very grateful for Bonnie's generousity and repeated support of our quilt show. We know her quilt will again garner much support for our UMHS patient families who need to look forward to better days dawning.

#18 Winner: Mark McGregor, PA in Radiology, bought for grandson
Made by Beth Minors (Pathology AP Adminstrative Assistant and a repeat Pathology quilter, donated this terrific child's Monster Mash quilt. This is 45 x 57 inches of pure fun, featuring 6 portraits of funny monsters. Beth framed them cock-eyes with blue, lack, green and hot pink....very clever, very cute. Anyone who liked Monster, Inc. would love this quilt. The borders show an entire parade of funny aliens. Great quilt, sure to be a hit, perfect for your favorite youngster. We are so grateful that Beth has a generous heart to go with her funny sense of humor.

#19 Winner: Nancy Lefebvre - Pathology Cytogenetics
Liz Rodriguiz (UM Dental School) made this great, very bright, very soft batik quilt. An entire flock of flying geese in pale pink, hot pink, pale blue, turquise, navy, pale purple, circle the perimeter of this 46 x 62 inch quilt. The middle uses small squares and triangles to make a very intricate pattern with great optical illusions of diamonds in circles....a terrific visual. The backing in a very soft pink fleece....great on the wall, or for keeping warm.

#20 Winner: Lisa Law, Mott, Midwife office
Using the same pattern as above, Liz Rodriguiz made a third quilt....same great design as #19, amazingly different appearance. She used the same very soft pink fleece on the back, wonderful for snuggling under. The dark magenta red batik is gorgeous all over, with flecks of pale blue, purple, gold, and yellow as highlights. This 40 x 56 inch quilt is sure to become a favorite. We are very grateful for all the great quilts that Liz donated.

#21 Winner: Judy Ahn-Ewing, Neurology Department
Melissa Liebaert's friend's "Candy Cane Coins" is a 60 x 75 inch quilt which is bright and happy and just as perfect for a summer picnic as it is decorating a wallvfor a Christmas party. Strips of red and white material are sewn together in long rows - like stacks of coins - and then six rows are joined with sashing of bright red. I see ants crawling all over it in summer, or on a little bistro table with a spaghetti dinner, her candy cane quilting favors of holiday theme. Voila.....it's a multi-tasker.....perfect for any occasion.

#22 Winner: Jennifer Merritt-Hackel, EAA Geriatrics, nurse practioner
Made by Connie Lukacs (one of our most terrific quilters and the saintly mother of Dr. Nick Lukacs in Pathology), this "Desert Time" quilt uses colors of the soutwest, in hourglass quarter square triangle blocks. A retired nurse herself, and a past UMHS patient, Connie's points are as perfect as her heart is generous. Shades of rose, purple, rust, green, brown and tan comprise a glorious color pallet on this 48 x 70 inch quilt. We are very grateful AGAIN this year for her donation. I'm sure her son won't mind that her quilt has some pink in it (think salmon, Nick) .

#23 Winner: Laura Blythe, Pathology Administration
Yuki Ito, generously donating to her third Pathology quilt show, is not only the wife of Hiro Ito, a post-doctoral fellow in Pathology Research, but is also the friend of many Pathology staff (see quilt #1). Yuki learned to quilt when she came to the US, as she wanted to embrace American culture, but she brought with her from Japan her extremely generous spirit and willingness to help others. We are so grateful for her gift of this Michigan quilt. Perfect for any Michigander, it is composed of MANY little squares to make a final size of 43 x 43 inches. and shows the UP and the Lower Peninsula on a field of light blue water. Liz Bowman quilted waves all over the Great Lakes state. While most of the state is done in graded shades of blue, the greater southeast MI area is done in concentric circles of maize, with a hand appliqued "UM" logo block locating Ann Arbor. This would look outstanding in any UM office.....or home of a leader and best.

Ann Arbor, Detroit, Ypsi, Dexter, Canton, Milan, Saline, Brighton, UMHS

Saginaw, Bay City, Midland

Mackinaw City, Cheboygan, Petosky

Charlevoix, Traverse City, Grand Traverse Bay, Sleeping Bear Dunes

Hail to the Victors

#24 Winner: Susan Gorny, School of Nursing, new to the UMHS, she saw our ad in the Daily Bulletin
Back this year by EXTREMELY popular demand is the gorgeous 44 x 53 inch Michigan Lighthouse quilt. Actually, we begged Pat Morrow (wife of Tom Morrow in Pathology Administration) and Jackie Raphelson to make this quilt for us again this year, because it was SO wildly popular last year. We Michiganders love our waterways. We are very grateful that they graciously accomodated us (quilters usually don't like to make duplicate quilts, as they want to move on to a new challenge). We know these 25 machine embroidered lighthouses from around the Great Lakes will again be on many people's wish lists. The quilt has a sleeve on the back and is ready to be hung. For anyone who loves the Great Lakes, this wonderful quilt is a masterpiece, sure to bring back memories of a summer camping trip or the family cabin on one of the lakes. The machine lighthouse cross stitch patterns are available at the Alma Sewing Center, in Alma Michigan

Some of the 25 lighthouses stitched onto the pale blue background are: Ministique East Breakwater, Grand Haven, St. Joseph, Old Presque Isle, Big Sable, Copper Harbor, White Fish Point, Charlevoix South Pier, Bete Grise, Point Sanilac, South Haven, Manitou Island....and many more.
We know this will be an extremely popular quilt, and we are thrilled that these lighthouses will help rescue the neediest of our UM patients.

#25 Winner: Bev Walker, Mother-in-law of Liz Walker (Pathology Photography)
Without a doubt Ginny Weber (mother of Peggy Otto in Pathology Administration) is the foundation quilter of our Pathology Charity quilt show. She has been generously sewing and donating quilts for many years. (Note....she and her quilt group in Dexter ALSO donate many quilts each year to Mott Children's hospital which are given to patients). She has single-handedly helped many UMHS families with her fabric efforts. We are extrememly grateful for her donation each year. This year's quilt is a beauty. An Asian themed "Oriental Splendor" features Asian fabrics sewn in swirling curves (no easy feat!), frame in bright red, gold. The outer border looks like reflections on a pool of colored water, done in satin stitch, but it is all in the clever fabric. Gold, red, green, blue.....gorgeous colors, sure to please all. It's 60 x 88 size makes it a great twin or full sized bed quilt.

#26 Winner: Pat Gerisch
A quilt of Christmas Wishes was generously donated by Melissa Liebaert's friend. Blocks of Christmas toys, a little drummer boy and ballerina doll are centered inside frames featuring Christmas wishes. This is a great quilt to tuck someone in with on Christmas eve, and its 67 x 75 inch size makes it a perfect twin bed size. One of the blocks says "May all your dreams come true". The donation of this quilt will no doubt help provide a few dreams for a lucky winner (and a UMHS patient family).

#27 Winner: Kathleen Glynn - EAA
This adorable 12 x 32 inch Pumkin Bar recipe wall hanging was made and donated by Amy Kinder, a friend of Liz Walker (Pathology Photography). She hand embroidered the recipe for what sounds like delicious pumpkin bars on a field of off white muslin and completed it by added two orange pumpkins at the top and bottom and bordering and backing it with a dark brown fabric with a spray of little flowers. This would be perfect for the fall, terrific at Thanksgiving, and we are SO thankful for her generous donation.

#28 Winner: Sharon Lawry - Pathology Blood Bank
The final Melissa Liebaert's friend’s quilt is this adorable baby quilt which she named Cuddles. Made entirely of soft flannels of white, pink and baby blue, this quilt would make the perfect baby gift. It is incredibly soft, and tiny bears and bunnies romp all over the 45 x 49 inches. It's name is fitting as it would be a wonderfully cuddly baby quilt.

#29 Winner: Diana Rausch - Kresge Hearing Research Inst.
Batik Block Bingo was made by Robin Kunkel of Pathology Research. This BIG, 90 x 100 inch queen or king quilt is a study in color. Ninety blocks are made in alternating patterns of 4 patch and quarter square triangle hourglasses. The squares resemble a bingo card, with the rows separated by 2 inch sashing made of light tan batik with wavy dotted lines of blue, purple and brown. There is also a optical illusion image of diamonds all over the quilt. Most of the batiks for this quilt were collected in Kansas City with the assistance of Robin's mom and dad, sister, niece and nephew. Liz Bowman expertly quilted mirrored patterns into each square, which makes the light yellow viney batik on back a veritable quilt, too.

#30 Winner: Zoe Koosis - EAA, wife of UMHS Dean & Pathology Faculty Dave Gordon
Another batik quilt made by Robin Kunkel and quilted by Liz Bowman. This BIGGER quilt (88 x 106 inches) will fit on a queen or king bed. A Diamond Delight, she was inspired by the colors she saw while diving in the Caribbean this past summer. The bright blues and reds, oranges, purples and yellows found underwater in the beautiful reefs are shown as schools of diamond "fish" cascading over the "wall". OK, everyone may not see this, but the colors were very appealing to her, and she hopes others will imagine their own story when they see the rich jewel tones... could be a fall sunset or gentle rain falling on summer flowers. Liz Bowman worked her magic, quiting a great "tropicalesque" flora pattern in variegated threads. Robin used her absolutely favorite fabric to frame the quilt... she hopes someone will think it's a diamond delight.
