Dr. Smith received an A.B. in art history and psychology from the University of Michigan Honors Program in 1992 and an M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School in 2002. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1991 and was elected to and served as president of Alpha Omega Alpha. She was also president of the University of Michigan chapter of Medical Students for Choice. In 2002, she received the AMWA award for top women medical school graduates.

Prior to medical school, Dr. Smith worked at the University of California in San Francisco doing molecular research and at Columbia University as a manuscript editor. While in medical school, she received a Blue Cross Blue Shield research grant. Her work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals including the American Journal of Medical Genetics, and Nature Genetics. She has spent time volunteering for Planned Parenthood and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

In July 2002, she joined the Residency Program in the Department of Pathology, completed a Hematopathology Fellowship during the period 2005-2006 and is currently a House Officer V.
