Interests
Hematopathology - leukemia, lymphoma, and molecular
genetics.
Research Interests
Mechanisms of Hox gene regulation by the mixed
lineage leukemia protein, MLL, transcriptional deregulation by MLL fusion
proteins, role of Hox genes in hematopoiesis and leukemia.
Brief
Biography
Dr. Hess received a B.S. in Biophysics
from Johns Hopkins University (1982), where he was co-valedictorian
of his graduating class. In 1989, he received an M.D. and Ph.D. (Molecular
Biology) from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After
completing residency training in Anatomic Pathology at Brigham and Women's
Hospital/Harvard Medical School (Boston), Dr. Hess completed fellowships
in Hematopathology and Surgical Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital
and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (New York).
He served as Assistant Professor of Pathology and Co-Director of the
Hematopathology Training Program at Washington University School of
Medicine and as assistant attending pathologist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital
in St. Louis (1993-1999), where he worked closely with Dr. Stanley Kotsmeyer
studying the molecular biology of leukemia. He joined the faculty of
the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University
of Pennsylvania Health System in 1999 as Associate Professor and was
promoted to the rank of Professor in 2004. While at the University of
Pennsylvania, Dr. Hess served as Director of Hematopathology and Co-Director
of the Hematologic Malignancies Program at the Abramson Cancer Center.
Dr. Hess is a member of the College of American
Pathologists, American Society of Hematopathologists, United States
and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the American Society of Hematology,
the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Association
of Pathology Chairs. He serves as editor for a number of journals including
the American Journal of Clinical Pathology and is board certified in
Anatomic Pathology and Hematopathology.
Dr. Hess joined the faculty of the Department of Pathology at the University
of Michigan in July 2005 as the Carl V. Weller Professor of Pathology
and Chair.
