Brief Biography:

Dr. Appelman earned his M.D. degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1961 and completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Michigan Department of Pathology in 1966.

After this training, Dr. Appelman spent two years in the Skin and Gastrointestinal Branch of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology which led to his subspecialization in gastrointestinal pathology. His first honest job was as a faculty member of the Department of Pathology, Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphiain 1968. A year later he returned to the University of Michigan Department of Pathology as an Assistant Professor, and he rose to the rank of Professor of Pathology in 1975. In 1997, Dr. Appelman was appointment the first M.R. Abell Endowed Professor in Surgical Pathology. During the past 40+ years, Dr. Appelman has made numerous educational and scientific contributions in gastrointestinal pathology. He has served as President of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, as President of the Organization for Statistical Studies of Diseases of the Oesophagus, as the first President of the Gastrointestinal Pathology Club (later the Society), and as a member of the editorial boards of 3 of the most commonly read journals in pathology.

Scholarly Activities

Early studies of stromal trumors of the gastrointestinal tract, dysplasia in inflammatory bowel diseases and acute infectious colitis. More recent studies on unusual esophageal inflammations and variabiity of distribution in ulcerative colitis with time and treatment.
