Special Handling:
No tourniquet. Place on ice immediately and deliver to lab or aliquot within 15 minutes.
Offsite Collection:
It is recommended to draw lactic acid without a tourniquet or immediately after applying the tourniquet. If the tourniquet is applied for an extended time, remove the tourniquet and let the blood circulate two minutes prior to retrying the draw. Collect specimen in gray top tube. Invert tube gently to mix. Place specimen on ice. Centrifuge, aliquot plasma into a plastic vial within 15 minutes of collection and freeze immediately.
Onsite Collection (UMHS Hospitals Only):
It is recommended to draw lactic acid without a tourniquet or immediately after applying the tourniquet. If the tourniquet is applied for an extended time, remove the tourniquet and let the blood circulate two minutes prior to retrying the draw. Collect specimen in gray top tube. Invert specimen container gently to mix. Transport on ice. Specimen must be delivered to Chemical Pathology Laboratory within 15 minutes of collection.

Test Usage:
The over-production or underutilization of lactate usually results in lactic acidosis. Increased lactate levels can occur due to tissue hypoxia, diabetes mellitus, malignancies, glycogen storage disease, metabolic acidosis, and ethanol, methanol or salicylate ingestion.
