UMHS Pathology Data Systems' Safety / Chemical Hygiene Plan

Effective: 3/22/96
Revised: 4/18/97, 4/8/99, 4/24/01, 2/10/03, 12/31/03

I. Chemical Safety

A. General Laboratory Safety Guidelines

  1. Read the label of the chemical.
  2. Observe the precautions listed.
  3. Do not perform procedures requiring the use of hazardous chemicals if alone in the lab.
  4. Do not mouth pipette.
  5. Do not apply cosmetics.

For additional information pertaining to chemical safety refer to:

Chemical Hygiene Officer: J.T.Carver, Safety Building and Environmental Management

Emergency Coordinator: Kathy Davis, 936-6744. In her absence contact Supervisor or Person in Charge.

B. Chemical Storage

No Toxic Substances are stored in Pathology Data Systems. None of the tonor cartridges nor any of the cleaning products used in PDS equipment present a hazard when used as directed.

II. Personal Protective Equipment

The chemicals used by Pathology Data Systems do not present an exposure hazard when used as directed. Gloves are available to handle the toner if desired by the user.

III. Exposure Hazards

The Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) developed for each chemical by the manufacturer are the best source of information for detail of exposure hazards. The MSDS for chemicals used in Pathology Data Systems are stored within Pathology Data Systems (see the Fire and Safety Manual, Chemical Safety tab), as well as online. Original product containers are labeled with the physical and health hazards of the chemical. The Pathology Data Systems CHP will indicate the target organ with lettered abbreviations as to the organ/system or route of entry that may be affected by exposure to a particular chemical. All chemicals listed have an ingestion hazard. Should accidental ingestion occur seek medical attention immediately.

A. System/Organ/Route of Entry Codes

Code Target Organ
E Eye
IH Inhalation
Sk Skin
R Reproductive
MM Mucous Membranes
L Liver
CNS Central Nervous System

IV. Physical/Chemical Hazard

Pathology Data Systems will use NFPA labels and Right-To-Know (RTK) pictorials in an attempt to further the employee's awareness of the physical/chemical properties of the chemicals inventoried.
Hazard Class
F	Flammable
C	Corrosive
E	Explosive
CA	Carcinogen
P	Poison
I	Irritant

V. Spills & Accidents: Contingency Plan and Emergency Procedures

Safety Building and Environmental Management (SB&EM) shall assist and provide area monitoring when necessary. In accordance with the Hazardous Materials/Waste Management and Laboratory Safety Policy #05-03-026, SB&EM must be notified of all hazardous material spills.

A. Spill Kit Location

Not applicable for PDS.

B. Assessment

  1. If a chemical fire or explosion occurs, initiate the Fire Safety Communication Action Plan and evacuate the area. See attached PDS Fire Plan.

  2. In the event an unplanned release of chemical should occur that does not result in fire or explosion, the manager or team lead should determine if an evacuation is necessary based on the size of the spill and the properties of the chemical spilled. Review the Chemical in UMHS On-line MSDS system.

  3. The following chemicals have MSDS sheets on file:

C. Spill Control and Cleanup

While there are no liquid chemicals within Pathology Data Systems, our staff do work in areas which use and store liquid chemicals. This section is included as a reference for PDS staff working in an area where a spill occurs.

  1. Small Chemical Spill (approximately one pint or slightly larger than the contents of a 12 ounce pop can)
    • Don protective clothing or equipment.
    • Restrict entrance to the affected area.
    • Contain the spill.
    • Use the appropriate kit to neutralize and absorb the substance.
    • Collect the residue and dispose of as chemical waste.

  2. Larger Chemical Spills (over one pint)
    • Restrict traffic in the area of the spill.
    • Contain the spill if possible.
    • The Emergency Coordinator should contact SB&EM Monday-Friday at: 764-4427.
After hours, weekends, call Hospital Security at 936-7890.
    • Consider the size of the spill and the chemical's properties to determine if an evacuation is necessary.

D. In the event an evacuation is necessary

  • Remove persons from danger.
  • Close doors to the affected area.
  • Initiate the Emergency Weather/Fire Fan-Out to alert personnel of the existence of a potentially hazardous situation.
  • The Emergency Coordinator should contact SB&EM Monday-Friday at: 764-4427.
After hours, weekends, call Hospital Security at 936-7890.
The Emergency Coordinator should advise SB&EM personnel.
  • Evacuate to a location outside the affected area. See attached Unit Specific Fire Plan.

E. Injury

First Aid Procedures for chemical related injury until medical attention is provided are found in the OSEH Laboratory Safety Manual (page 4). Many of the chemical labels have first aid treatment on them. For any work related injury you must:

F. Medical Surveillance

If signs or symptoms of overexposure result from working with a chemical or as a result of injury when working with chemicals in Pathology Data Systems, a medical examination or consultation will be done by a licensed physician of Employee Health Service at no cost to you.
In addition to informing your supervisor, and completing a UM MIOSHA 101A, provide the following information: identity of the hazardous chemical used, a description of the exposure history, and signs and symptoms exhibited by the employee.

You will receive a written opinion from the examining physician that will include:

These records are to be maintained by Safety Building and Environmental Management and Employee Health Services. The Manager of PDS will maintain a record of reported accidents for Pathology Data Systems.
