BLOOD BANKING AND TRANSFUSION MEDICINE:

This training program provides experience in all aspects of blood banking in a tertiary care hospital which houses a multi-organ transplant center, including bone marrow transplantation, a large hematology/oncology service and an extensive surgical program. The blood bank provides over 100,000 units of blood and components annually, and includes an AABB-accredited Reference Laboratory. The Apheresis Procedures Unit affords the candidate excellent experience in therapeutic apheresis, HPC collection and LDL apheresis. The program also provides for experience in perinatal transfusion, coagulation, histocompatibility testing, and HPC processing. Exposure to all aspects of blood procurement is provided through the cooperative participation of the American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Blood Services. Graded assumption of responsibility for medical, administrative and instructional activities by the fellow is encouraged. Research opportunities are provided commensurate with the fellow's interest and experience.

Requirements:
Candidates must be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Pathology or other major specialty board, meet the eligibility requirements of the Department of Pathology and be licensed or eligible for licensure, to practice medicine in the State of Michigan.

CYTOPATHOLOGY

Program(s):

This one-year advanced training in cytopathology is designed to provide comprehensive training in diagnostic cytology including both gynecologic and nongynecologic material with emphasis on performance and interpretation of fine needle aspiration biopsies (FNA) with surgical pathology and clinical correlation. The cytology lab evaluates approximately 43,000 Pap smears and 8,800 nongynecologic specimens including 2,000 FNAs per year. The University of Michigan has a strong oncologic service with a full range of cancer-related clinical and research programs. The fellow will be expected to participate fully in the FNA Clinic, rapid on-site assessment of FNA utilizing conventional method and telecytology, daily cytologic signing out, conferences and teaching and will be required to initiate a research project. The fellow will also gain experience in utilization of new preparation techniques, e.g. the ThinPreps. Ancillary techniques such as flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, image analysis and molecular biology are available. The laboratory is fully computerized which allows easy retrieval of specimens for teaching, research or quality control purposes.

DERMATOPATHOLOGY:

The Department of Pathology, in conjunction with the Department of Dermatology, offers an ACGME-accredited, one-year fellowship in dermatopathology with emphasis on diagnostic dermatopathology. The program is well balanced and provides broad exposure to all areas of dermatopathology, including inflammatory dermatoses and cutaneous oncology. Pathology-trained fellows spend a portion of their training rotating in the Dermatology Clinic. Dermatology-trained fellows rotate in surgical pathology, with emphasis in areas that overlap with dermatopathology. All fellows interact closely with residents, fellows and staff of the Dermatology Department and University of Michigan Multidisciplinary Melanoma Program. The dermatopathology service has approximately 20,000 accessions per year, including in house cases, outside consultative cases, and direct immunofluorescence specimens. The fellow is encouraged to participate in ongoing investigative projects in the area of dermatopathology.

HEMATOPATHOLOGY

Program(s):

The Department of Pathology offers an ACGME-accredited fellowship in hematopathology with emphasis on diagnostic hematopathology and laboratory hematology. The program is designed to train academically oriented physicians to be subspecialists in the area of hematopathology. Program includes training in peripheral blood and bone marrow morphology/interpretation, lymph node pathology, laboratory hematology, coagulation, flow cytometric immunophenotyping, immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, and molecular pathology. The fellow is the primary reviewer of cases submitted to the Hematology Laboratory and interacts closely with fellows and staff on the Hematology Service. The laboratory performs approximately 370,000 hematology tests/year and evaluates more than 3000 bone marrows and lymph nodes per year. Candidates can select either of one or two-year programs with the second year dedicated to basic and translational research. In addition, specialty electives and opportunities for independent case signout privileges will be available.

HLA TISSUE TYPING

Program(s):

This two year fellowship will provide histocompatibility and immunogenetics laboratory director training. Training includes all areas of ASHI accreditation except Parentage Testing. This ASHI accredited program provides experience in all aspects of a hospital-based histocompatibility laboratory. The University of Michigan Health System encompasses a high volume multi-organ transplant center, including adult and pediatric solid organ and stem cell transplant. The laboratory also performs assays for transfusion support and HLA for disease association cases. The program is designed to provide the necessary requirements to qualify for the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetic certification and ASHI/CMS/UNOS accreditation for qualified directors. Extensive opportunities for research experience are available with the Department of Pathology.

Requirements:
Candidates must have earned an MD or a PhD in Immunology, Genetics or in a related biological science from an accredited institution. In addition to educational requirements, applicants must have at least two years of full-time post-doctoral laboratory training or experience in immunology, histocompatibility, immunogenetics, or a related field or must have completed a residency in CP or AP/CP or other related medical specialty.

Stipends:
The program is funded via the Department of Pathology at the University of Michigan. Salary support will be commensurate with the candidate's level of training.

MOLECULAR GENETIC PATHOLOGY

The Department of Pathology offers a one-year fellowship in molecular genetic pathology with emphasis on molecular-based diagnostic techniques. The program includes training in all areas of molecular genetic pathology, including molecular hematopathology, oncology, infectious diseases, tissue typing, pharmacogenomics, inherited disorders, cytogenetics and medical genetics. Each year, the laboratories perform approximately 50,000 molecular infectious disease tests, 7,000 genetic screening tests, and 2,000 molecular hematopathology/oncology tests. The fellow will gain experience in a broad range of state-of-the-art molecular and cytogenetic techniques including nucleic acid extraction, hybridization technologies, FISH, amplification technologies (PCR, RT-PCR, quantitative PCR), capillary electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, and high throughput molecular genetic testing. Trainees will have significant clinical laboratory responsibilities during the course of the training program, being actively involved in test interpretation and reporting, test development and validation, and serving as consultants to clinicians in a variety of disciplines. Numerous opportunities for research experience are available with the Department of Pathology and the Department of Human Genetics.

Neuropathology

This two-year ACGME-accredited fellowship provides broad and comprehensive training in surgical neuropathology, muscle and nerve biopsy and autopsy neuropathology. The University of Michigan Health System is busy tertiary referral center, which generates over 65,000 surgical specimens annually including over 1,200 surgical neuropathology specimens, 2,000 NP histochemical specimens, immunohistochemical specimens, eye neuropathology and CSF cytologic specimens in addition to a robust consultation service. The broad range of clinical and research interests of the faculty provide fellows with extensive clinical experience and many opportunities to engage in collaborative research projects. In addition, fellows benefit from the diverse clinical and research activities within division, department, and medical school. The second year of the fellowship will be focused on identification and completion of a project utilizing state of the art approaches to answer clinical, translational or cellular and molecular questions.

Requirements:

FORENSIC PATHOLOGY

Program(s):

The Department of Pathology at the University of Michigan offers a one-year fellowship in forensic pathology. This is advanced training program to prepare pathologists in all aspects of forensic pathology. The two forensic pathologists within the Pathology Department perform approximately 350 medicolegal autopsies originating in Washtenaw County. Additional case experience is obtained by participating in death scene investigations and performing autopsies at the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office in Detroit, Michigan. The fellow receives additional training in courtroom testimony, toxicology, criminalistics, anthropology, odontology and other forensic science related specialities. Administrative, managerial, and research techniques are also stressed. The office operates an on-line computerized data system.

Requirements:
Candidates must have completed a AP/CP or anatomic pathology residency and must be eligible for a license to practice in Michigan.

SURGICAL PATHOLOGY

This one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship provides broad and comprehensive training in diagnostic surgical pathology of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. The University of Michigan Hospital and Health System is busy tertiary referral center, which generates over 65,000 surgical specimens annually, and in conjunction with our busy extramural consultant practice, there are nearly 80,000 cases accessioned annually in the surgical pathology. The University houses a Comprehensive Cancer Center with active oncologic services and a full range of cancer-related clinical and research programs. It is also an active transplant center. A large faculty with a broad ranges of clinical and research interests allow fellows to gain unparalleled clinical experience and opportunities to engage in collaborative research projects. In addition to working in a very rich and active general surgical pathology service the fellowship includes subspecialty rotations in gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, breast, head and neck, and bone and soft tissue pathology. The program emphasizes intraoperative frozen section consultation, participation in clinicopathologic conferences and extramural consultation practice. There is ample time provided for electives in other areas of pathology such as pulmonary pathology, dermatopathology, neuropathology, pediatric pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology and molecular diagnostics. Fellows can also use elective time to tailor their experience toward an area of subspecialization. Our faculty is actively involved in clinical and translational research and fellows are encouraged to participate in a research project during the year. Teaching and mentoring of residents and fourth year medical students is also an important component of the experience.

BREAST PATHOLOGY

The Breast Pathology Fellowship is a one year program that provides a thorough exposure to diagnostic surgical pathology of the breast as well as insight into the multidisciplinary management of breast disease. The main objective of the program is to provide the fellow with proficient diagnostic skills, in-depth understanding of the implications of pathologic diagnoses in the management of breast cancer patients, and a unique translational research experience. The fellow will concentrate on signing out breast pathology transfer cases and referral consultation cases from a very active breast care clinic and regional/national consultation service, respectively. The fellow will discuss the cases at the weekly Multidisciplinary Breast Care Clinic Conference, which provides a unique learning experience. The research focus of the fellowship will be tailored to meet the individual fellow's interest He/she will have the opportunity to conduct clinical projects, and/or translational research projects, including use of high-density tissue microarray and cDNA array technology. The opportunity to have a general surgical pathology rotation during this fellowship is available.

GASTROINTESTINAL PATHOLOGY

The Department of Pathology offers a one-year fellowship in gastrointestinal-hepatobiliary pathology with emphasis on diagnosis and clinicopathologic correlation. The fellowship begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th of the following year. The program includes training in diagnosis and handling of resections and biopsies of the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, the pancreas and the biliary tract, with supporting immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics. The fellow is the primary consultant for the daily diagnostic service for about 6 months and interacts closely with house officers, clinicians, clerical and technical staff and the GI pathology faculty. The in-house diagnostic service handles approximately 65 cases per day. There is an active liver transplant program, so the fellow will gain extensive experience with liver resections and post transplant biopsies. In addition, the fellow spends about 6 months on the consult service, covering the 8-12 problem cases daily which are submitted by pathologists from other institutions. During the consult service rotation, the fellow is instructed in composing meaningful consultation reports. An elective rotation on the endoscopy service is included in the training. The fellow will participate in regular gastrointestinal and liver pathology interdisciplinary and intradepartmental conferences including the weekly Gastrointestinal Tumor Board. The fellow is encouraged to participate in clinically oriented research projects with the aim of presenting these projects at national meetings and publishing them subsequently.

GENITOURINARY PATHOLOGY:

The Departments of Pathology and Urology, offer a one-year fellowship in genitourinary surgical pathology with emphasis on diagnostic uropathology. This program has both strong clinical and research components. The fellow will act as the primary consultant for the genitourinary pathology service, which handles a wide variety of biopsies and resection specimens. The University of Michigan has a federally funded Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in prostate cancer. The fellow is expected to pursue research projects in addition to ongoing clinical and teaching activities.

GYNECOLOGIC PATHOLOGY:

The Gynecologic Pathology fellowship is a one-year program that begins on July 1 and continues through June 30 of the following year. The curriculum provides thorough exposure to diagnostic surgical pathology of the female genital tract, emphasizing diagnosis and clinical-pathologic correlation. The fellow's responsibilities will include sign-out of gynecologic pathology transfer cases and preview of referral consultation cases from an active regional/national consultation service. During the latter half of the fellowship, qualified fellows will be given the opportunity to sign out in-house cases independently. The fellow will also present cases at the weekly Gynecologic Oncology tumor board conference, which provides a unique multi-disciplinary learning experience. The research component of the fellowship will be tailored to the individual fellow's interests, with opportunities to participate in clinical, translational, and/or basic research projects related to gynecologic pathology.

INFORMATICS:

A two-year Pathology Informatics and Pathology Data Architecture fellowship is available for those with strong interest in information technology as applied towards the collective specialties of both anatomic and clinical pathology. The program is structured to allow the fellow to rapidly gain proficiency with the use of information technology, process automation, asset tracking technology, and high-throughput computational methodologies, thus creating the necessary skill set to serve in project-lead roles as quickly as possible. Emphasis is placed on important subspecialties including: Laboratory Information System (LIS) operational and design concepts, design and implementation strategies for optimal database architecture, issues intrinsic to massive database repositories, user interface design, automated tracking of workflow including use of the latest-generation bar coding technologies, natural language / lexical analysis / regular expression / heuristic analysis tools and their deployment to reduce error and improve patient safety and outcomes. Additional areas of focus, based upon individual career goals, include: information delivery using Web-based architectures, collaborative cloud/grid-based computation, scripting and 4GL programming, image repository management, digital imaging and whole-slide imaging, bioinformatics and high-throughput computation (in partnership with the Translational Pathology Division), content-based image retrieval, automated report generation, federation of data sources / federated architectures and, finally, use of information technology to enhance educational initiatives. The above curriculum will be tailored to meet the specific needs and interests of each fellow while at the same time ensuring that coverage of core curriculum content is preserved. Core competencies in each of the major areas of applied clinical informatics, research/investigative informatics and education will be covered throughout the year, in the form of both didactic content and project-oriented exercises. Fellows will work with the staff of a well-established, pathology-based informatics division, in concert with pathologists and staff throughout the department other teams in the University Hospital at large and with other areas and departments of the university, as predicated by specific project (joint projects with the College of Engineering being a good example). Frequently, the informatics fellow will be called upon to act as a liaison and team lead for challenging information technology and data architecture issues, working shoulder to shoulder with pathology residents, department staff and members of a large and complex health system. It is expected that fellows will participate in original informatics research during their fellowship, with such efforts leading to quality publications in high-impact journals, and presentations at national/international meetings.

PEDIATRIC PATHOLOGY

This fellowship offers an exciting and comprehensive training in pediatric surgical, autopsy and clinical pathology, which prepares fellows to practice general pediatric pathology in academic or community setting. Over 5,000 pediatric surgical pathology specimens, 212 perinatal and pediatric autopsies and fetal examinations are performed yearly. Additional outside pediatric surgical and autopsy pathology consultations are also available for training. The fellowship is based at the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) and its affiliated C.S Mott Children?s, Women?s and University Hospitals. UMHS is an award-winning health care system and premier academic medical center with excellence in medical education, patient care and research.

Requirements:
AP or AP/CP qualified applicants eligible for Michigan Medical License. Candidates must have completed a minimum of two years of training in an accredited training program for Anatomic Pathology.

PULMONARY PATHOLOGY:

The pulmonary pathology fellowship is a one-year program that begins on July 1 and continues through June 30 of the following year. Opportunities also exist for additional training in a basic research setting, depending on the interests and career goals of the applicant.The core curriculum includes a robust combination of both institutional and consultation cases covering a diverse range of problems in neoplastic and non-neoplastic lung diseases. The emphasis is on histopathologic and cytologic diagnosis as well as clinically oriented research. Fellows will work closely with a number of faculty who have a collective experience of over 70 years in diagnostic pulmonary pathology and cytopathology, an established track record of academic achievement, and a strong commitment to education. Partnering with colleagues in Thoracic Surgery and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, fellows will have multiple opportunities for clinical-pathologic correlation in the course of case review as well as multidisciplinary conferences and collaborative projects. At the conclusion of this fellowship, incumbents will be well positioned for a career in any practice setting.

Requirements:
Applicants must be board certified or eligible in Anatomic Pathology by the beginning of the fellowship and be eligible for a license in the State of Michigan. Applications must include: 1) a letter expressing interest in the fellowship, 2) a resume or curriculum vita with bibliography, and 3) letters from 3 references, all from the postgraduate training period.

Stipends:
Salary will be commensurate with the candidate's level of training.
