ACGME FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS

BLOOD BANKING AND TRANSFUSION MEDICINE:

This program provides experience in all aspects of blood banking in a tertiary care hospital which houses a multi-organ transplant center, including bone marrow transplantation, a large hematology/oncology service and an extensive surgical program. The Blood Bank provides over 100,000 units of blood and components annually and includes an AABB-accredited Reference Laboratory. The Transfusion and Apheresis service of the laboratory affords the candidate excellent experience in therapeutic plasma exchange, outpatient transfusion and cytapheresis. The program also provides for experience in perinatal transfusion, coagulation and histocompatibility testing. Exposure to all aspects of blood procurement is available through the cooperative participation of the Southeastern Michigan Red Cross Blood Center. Graded assumption of responsibility for medical administrative and instructional activities by the fellow is encouraged.

INFORMATICS/CLINICAL PATHOLOGY:

The Division of Pathology Informatics has established a new Fellowship Program in Pathology Informatics that takes advantage of the numerous unique settings made possible by the department’s historical leadership role in this field.  Whereas most pathology departments are dependent on external, centralized information technology resources for both operational and research support, the Informatics Division within Pathology at Michigan is largely self-contained with numerous areas of expertise that touch upon all aspects of informatics as pertaining to clinical operations, research and education.  Fellows rotating though this one-year program will be exposed to a rich portfolio of domain areas by methods that include didactic instruction, hands-on tutorials, as well as actual application projects.  Assigned tasks will be real-world I.T. projects that will ultimately contribute to the overall departmental I.T. infrastructure, with degree of responsibility being commensurate with a fellow’s proven track record of completion and competence.  Representative topics of study and ongoing projects for active participation will include the following:

  • History of Medical and Pathology Informatics
  • Principles of clinical laboratory information system design
  • Relational database architectures
  • Information exchange and interoperability concepts
  • Medical informatics tools for decision support
  • Hardware fundamentals
  • Information Technology Management Fundamentals
  • Strategic concepts for LIS deployment
  • Automated asset tracking / barcode and RFID fundamentals
  • Electronic order entry fundamentals
  • Buy vs. Build concepts
  • Fundamentals of Software design and software co-development
  • Workflow optimization and Lean/Six Sigma tools in support of such efforts
  • Data Repository Fundamentals
  • Overview of Medical Lexicons
  • Fundamentals of Bioinformatics and analysis of complex data sets
  • Applied projects in functional LIS module deployment
  • Applied projects in Bioinformatics data analysis
  • Image management and analysis fundamentals
  • Image query technologies / computer assisted diagnosis
  • Whole-slide imaging / digital pathology workflow models and telepathology
  • I.T. support of quality issues for both AP and CP specialties
  • Rational user interface and report design
  • Federated Electronic Health Record concepts and deployment strategies
  • Additional projects in informatics as identified by fellows and their mentors, as well as independent study

At the completion of this program, fellows will be fully capable of running their own data center in support of pathology-centric applications, with their having a broad range of problem-solving skills and repertoire of domain knowledge for integrating disparate architectures and systems.  The fellowship is designed to complement the skill sets of those who already possess established competence in anatomic and clinical pathology, with the fellowship vision being the training of the next generation of though-leaders in this important and rapidly growing field.

Requirements:

Applications must be board certified or eligible in Clinical Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and be eligible for a license in Michigan.
Applications, with curriculum vitae and three letters of reference should be made by January 1 for fellowships beginning July 1 of the following year.
