This test is available only to University of Michigan registered patients. Please contact the Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) Laboratory at 734-763-6295 to schedule an appointment. Patient Instructions for Collection of Seminal Specimen:
  1. Refrain from any sexual activity including masturbation for 2-7 days. Longer or shorter periods of abstinence may result in abnormal results.
  2. The semen specimen should be collected by masturbation. Alternate methods may be discussed but are not recommended. Do not use any commercial lubricants or collect the specimen in a condom as these products may contain spermicidal agents which will alter the results of the analysis. If lubricant or condom must be used, the laboratory will provide a special semen collection condom and lubricant.
  3. The semen specimen should be produced into a container approved by the ART Lab. Be sure hands and penis are cleaned prior to collection. Avoid touching the inside of the cup. If any semen is spilled, do not attempt to transfer it into the cup, but notify laboratory personnel.
  4. Bring the specimen to the laboratory within one hour after collection. Do not expose the specimen to extremes of temperature. Place specimen container upright in plastic bag and keep it close to body temperature by transporting close to the body (not in a purse or briefcase). A private room is available for collection of the specimen at the clinic.
  5. Label the specimen collection container with the self-adhesive label printed with your name and registration number from the ART Lab Order form. This will eliminate the possibility of mislabeling.
Rejection Criteria:
Unacceptable specimens are as follows: a) collected over one hour before arriving at ART Laboratory, b) Container is cracked, broken, and/or leaking specimen, c) Specimen container unapproved by the ART Laboratory d) Container is hot or cold to the touch and was not protected from temperature extremes, e) Specimen collected by use of condom not provided by the ART Laboratory, or f) Specimens brought in by unscheduled walk in appointments.
