Handling:

 

The specimen can be handled in one of two ways:

 

 

 

Open along the lateral borders, ink the deep and distal resection margins, pin out and fix.

Stuff the cavity with formalin soaked gauze, fix overnight, and cut in half. Ink the deep and distal resection margins.

 

Description:

 

a) Dimensions: Length, width, depth
b) Lesion: Size, depth, character (exophytic or ulcerated), distance from margins.
c) Uninvolved mucosa: Unremarkable, focal erythema, ulceration, etc.

 

Sections:


a) Ink the surgical margins.
b) Lesion: Submit entirely or at least 4 cassettes, to include the margins if possible.
c) Include distal resection margin.
