Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Our commitment to the highest level of excellence in patient care, research, and education is inseparable from our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

To that end, an initiative launched by President Schlissel created an overarching campus-wide strategic plan to:

 1) create an inclusive and equitable climate;

 2) recruit, retain, and develop a diverse community and

 3) support innovative and inclusive scholarship training.

For our part the pathology department formed a committee comprised of both faculty and staff from anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, pathology informatics and experimental pathology, with the primary goals of engaging our faculty and staff in an open and honest discussion and to brainstorm ideas on how to improve diversity, equity and inclusion in our department.

Using feedback from a department survey, the following initiatives have been launched

  • an upcoming town hall meeting where faculty and staff can share their personal experiences/stories
  • piloting innovative strategies to better incorporate diversity in our recruiting process
  • creating a diversity equity and inclusion portion on our pathology website to include upcoming events, essays, and resources
  • training all managers/supervisors on best interview and recruiting strategies and on recognizing unconscious bias
