The University of Michigan’s One-Year Surgical Pathology Fellowship offers exceptionally comprehensive experience in diagnostic surgical pathology, equipping you with expertise and confidence for independent practice and academic success. As a Surgical Pathology Fellow, you will be appointed as a clinical instructor—an opportunity that fosters professional development through graduated responsibility and autonomy.
Serving as a major tertiary referral center, the University of Michigan Hospital and Health System processes over 90,000 surgical specimens annually, alongside an active extramural consultation practice that generates nearly 35,000 cases each year. This outstanding case volume and diversity provide unparalleled exposure to a wide spectrum of disease—from routine cases to rare and diagnostically challenging cases—enabling you to refine your diagnostic skills in all subspecialty areas.
Our fellowship program places a strong emphasis on intraoperative frozen section diagnostics, offering opportunities for independent sign-out as competence is demonstrated. Additionally, our general surgical pathology (“Room 1”) service, comprising head and neck, endocrine, thoracic, bone and soft tissue cases, provides additional opportunities for competency-based independent signout. You will benefit from a supportive, world-class faculty who provide exceptional mentorship throughout your fellowship.
We offer flexible training paths to suit your career goals:
For those interested in expanding their expertise beyond clinical care, the University of Michigan offers a wealth of resources to support exploration in clinical research, medical education, healthcare administration, global health, and other facets of academic medicine.
Fellows divide their time between the main medical campus and an innovative 160,000 sq. ft. facility at the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC), just 15 minutes away. The medical campus includes University Hospital with newly renovated pathology spaces, a newly opened, state-of-the-art acute care hospital, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital, and the Cardiovascular Center. The NCRC offers world-class educational facilities, leading anatomic pathology labs, and a premier diagnostic genetics and genomics laboratory—earning recognition as “the Google of academic medicine.”
Ann Arbor, recently ranked the #1 U.S. city for quality of life by U.S. News and World Report (March 2024), is a thriving hub for startups and high-tech industries, bolstered by the University. The city features top-rated public schools, a vibrant restaurant scene, numerous museums and music venues, and abundant parks and trails—offering an outstanding environment to complement your fellowship experience.
