Surgical Pathology Fellowship

NEXT OPENINGS 2026-2027

This one year fellowship provides broad and comprehensive training in diagnostic surgical pathology. Surgical pathology fellows at the University of Michigan are appointed to the faculty as clinical instructors, which fosters professional development through graded responsibility and independence. The University of Michigan Hospital and Health System is tertiary referral center, which generates over 80,000 surgical specimens annually, and in conjunction with our busy extramural consultant practice, we accession nearly 100,000 cases annually. The University houses a Comprehensive Cancer Center with active oncologic services and a full range of cancer-related clinical and research programs. It is also an active transplant center. A large faculty with broad clinical and research interests allows fellows to gain unparalleled clinical experience and opportunities to engage in collaborative research projects. In addition to working in a very rich and active general surgical pathology service the fellowship includes subspecialty rotations in gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, breast, and bone and soft tissue pathology. The program emphasizes intraoperative frozen section consultation, participation in clinicopathologic conferences and extramural consultation practice. There is ample time provided for electives in other areas of pathology such as head and neck pathology, pulmonary pathology, dermatopathology, neuropathology, pediatric pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology and molecular diagnostics. Fellows can also use elective time to tailor their experience toward an area of subspecialization. Our faculty are actively involved in clinical and translational research and fellows are encouraged to participate in a research project during the year. Teaching and mentoring of residents and fourth year medical students is also an important component of the experience.  This program is not ACGME accredited.
