This two-year ACGME-accredited fellowship provides broad and comprehensive training in surgical neuropathology, muscle and nerve biopsy, and autopsy neuropathology. The University of Michigan Health System is a busy tertiary referral center, which generates over 100,000 surgical specimens annually. The neuropathology service receives around 3,000 specimens annually, including over 2,500 surgical neuropathology specimens, more than 350 muscle, and nerve biopsies, and about 150 brain autopsies. Our services include adult and pediatric patients. We receive a variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic surgical specimens. We also have very comprehensive in-house molecular testing for CNS tumor classification in which the fellows are active participants. Our brain autopsy service covers medical, degenerative, and forensic cases.
Our faculty has a broad range of clinical and research interests, providing fellows with extensive clinical experience and many opportunities to engage in collaborative research projects. In addition, fellows benefit from the diverse clinical and research activities within the division, department, and medical school.
The first year of fellowship is largely clinically based, where the fellows rotate through different services. The second year of the fellowship is a combination of clinical and research focus, depending on fellows’ professional goals. It is expected the fellows engage in scholarly activities that contribute to moving the field of neuropathology forward.
Abbreviations:
AP: Anatomic Pathology
NP: Neuropathology
PSTP: Physician Scientist Training Program
AP/CP: Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology
Requirements:
Applicants can apply after medical school through the National Resident Matching Program, following the AP/NP only or AP/NP-PSTP track (by selecting Pathology-AP/NP 1293300C2). Use the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).
Applicants are also accepted during pathology residency if they are on track to complete training in AP or AP/CP before starting the fellowship (see Applications).
AP/NP-PSTP track is better suited for applicants who have experience in research, the plan to pursue a physician-scientist career, and the goal of having an independent research laboratory. Applicants accepted under this track will have additional 2-years of support from the department to pursue independent research. They are also eligible to apply for internal and national training grants. More information about the Michigan Pathology PSTP track is found here.
AP/NP only, or NP applicants (after completing AP or AP/CP) do not commit to additional research training after completion of the NP portion of training. However, if desired, they can also pursue more research-focused training to make them competitive for further independent research opportunities.
Candidates must be US citizens, legal permanent residents (green card holders), or J1 visa holders.
Update - Effective immediately, for all non-US or Canadian medical school graduates, the applicant must hold a current, valid ECFMG certificate and be eligible for a State of Michigan professional license. State of Michigan license eligibility information is available at: www.michigan.gov.
Applications:
Applications are through the National Resident Matching Program (AP/NP only or AP/NP-PSTP: 1293300C2) for medical students looking to follow this residency track (AP/NP).
For current AP or AP/CP residents, apply HERE through the common fellowship application, open 2 years in advance of the starting date. Fellowship applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until available positions are filled. Applications will be reviewed once ALL required documents listed below are received:
Applications off-cycle may be considered at the discretion of the program director if the position is unfilled and based on the applicant’s package.
If you are having trouble submitting your application, try again on Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
Inquiries should be directed to:
