Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology Fellowship

Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology Fellowship

Next Opening  2026-2027

This one-year fellowship provides comprehensive training in diagnostic bone and soft tissue pathology. The fellow is appointed to the faculty as a clinical lecturer, which encourages professional development through graded responsibility and independence. We have a rich in-house, transfer, and consultation case mix. We participate in a very active sarcoma multidisciplinary tumor board, which is a national destination program that sees approximately 700 new patients per year. The fellow attends daily bone and soft tissue sign-out and actively participates in the weekly tumor board by presenting pathologic findings relevant to patient management. Time will also be dedicated to sign-out in the general sign-out/frozen section lab, as the in-house bone and soft tissue material (biopsies, resections, and intraoperative consultations) are encountered there. Familiarity with common and esoteric molecular diagnostic tests for sarcomas is gained through a rotation at our molecular pathology facility.

At least one research project is required with the potential to do an additional year of research. Numerous avenues for research collaboration exist at the University of Michigan. A well-attended monthly multidisciplinary sarcoma research meeting is held in the Comprehensive Cancer Center as well. Our group has been the beneficiary of a number of Anatomic Pathology Funding Grants in the past few years, which have led to numerous publications. Teaching and mentorship of residents is also an important component of the training program. This program is not ACGME accredited.
