This one-year advanced training in cytopathology is designed to provide comprehensive training in diagnostic cytopathology. The cytopathology laboratory evaluates approximately 23,000 Pap smears and 12,000 non-gynecologic specimens including 2300 fine needle aspirations (FNAs) per year. The program has four core faculty members who are board-certified in AP/CP and cytopathology and practice not only cytopathology but also subspecialties of surgical pathology. The program offers a large volume of diverse cases from in-house specimens and our consultative service, an emphasis in performing both palpation- and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirations, and training to provide a proficient rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) of fine-needle aspiration specimens prepared from ultrasound-, CT-, EUS- and EBUS-guided fine needle aspirations performed by other clinicians. Additionally, fellows become familiar with triaging specimens for appropriate ancillary tests, utilizing telecytopathology for ROSE, and practical training in laboratory management and quality control/assurance. The fellow will be expected to participate fully in FNA and In-hospital service and daily sign out. In addition, the fellow participates in the multidisciplinary thoracic oncology conference as a pathology representative, and in the teaching of pathology residents, cytotechnologists, and medical students. Academic pursuits are strongly encouraged and fellows are encouraged to engage in research, present in national meetings, and generate publications.
