Education in the Clinical Microbiology and Virology Laboratories

Medical Technology Students

The University of Michigan Clinical Microbiology Laboratory has affiliations with the accredited Medical Technology programs at Ferris State University, Eastern Michigan University, Wayne State University and Michigan State University. Selected students have a 5 to a 6-week clinical rotation in each area: Bacteriology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Parasitology, and Molecular Diagnostics. Students will gain real time experience with patient samples as well as utilization of diagnostic equipment.

Pathology Residents

Rotations through the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory are part of the Pathology Residency program.  While in the laboratory the residents are exposed to all the areas of the laboratory to get a strong understanding of techniques and procedures used to produce patient test results.  The residents also function as a reference source for the laboratorians and provide background information and advice for better performance of testing.

Infectious Disease Fellows and Pharmacy Residents

Rotations through the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory are part of the Pharmacy and Fellowship program.

Pharmacy Residents

Rotations through the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory are part of the Pharmacy Residency program.

High School Students

Ann Arbor Public High School students can participate in job shadowing activities in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory hosts students that have an interest in laboratory science as a career for four days of a two-week rotation. The job shadowing promotes the field of Clinical Laboratory Science as a career choice.
