Drs. Sarah Farran and Isabella Holmes, 2025-2026 Chief Residents for the Department of Pathology, are excited to announce Dr. Andrew Valesano will be joining the Chief Resident team as this year's Assistant Chief Resident.

Andrew Valesano, MD, PhD

“I’m proud and grateful for the team we have in our residency program, and I’m excited to contribute as much as I can. I’m looking forward to supporting our vibrant and inclusive environment for residents to learn a lot and have fun at the same time. Go Blue!”

Valesano grew up in Albany, Oregon, and traveled to Michigan to complete his undergraduate degree in Biology at Hope College (2015). In 2023, he earned his MD and PhD from the University of Michigan. During his PhD, Valesano studied genomic epidemiology and intrahost evolution of RNA viruses, where he developed methods to characterize viral genetic diversity within infected patients and investigate prolonged infections in immunocompromised hosts. His experiences, combined with his clinical training, sparked his interest in residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Since his residency began, he has become an active member of the Trainee Wellness Committee and is involved in research projects on genomics and computational pathology. After his residency, Valesano is planning on pursuing a fellowship in Molecular Genetic Pathology.

Outside of his training, Andrew enjoys playing pickleball, learning to roller skate, and spending time with family and friends.

Congratulations, Dr. Valesano!
