On September 14, 2025, Dr. Meredith Herman, Pathology House Officer III, was awarded the College of American Pathologist’s (CAP’s) Junior Member of the Year award, which is given to one resident or fellow annually who has made exceptional contributions to the field through leadership, advocacy, mentorship, and service. This award reflects the CAP’s commitment to supporting the next generation of pathologists and recognizing the impact residents can have on the specialty, even early in their careers. Herman was nominated by her mentors and colleagues, who have observed her commitment to advancing pathology through education and outreach.
“I could not be prouder of Meredith Herman for being recognized as the CAP Junior Member of the Year. This honor reflects not only her remarkable dedication to our patients and profession, but also her commitment to service and advocacy that inspires all of us. Meredith embodies the best of what it means to be a pathologist in training: intellectually curious, deeply compassionate, and unafraid to step forward in service of others. Her recognition is a moment of pride for Michigan Pathology and a reminder of the extraordinary impact our trainees can make well beyond the walls of the laboratory,” praised Dr. Kamran Mirza, Assistant Chair of Education.
“Throughout residency, I have worked to build initiatives that connect students to pathology, expand awareness of the field, and strengthen the pipeline for future pathologists. To have people I admire take the time to recognize those efforts by nominating me is incredibly meaningful,” said Herman.
Herman helped to develop an online platform, MatchToPath.com, geared toward guiding medical students through the residency application process, connecting them with mentors, and providing accessible resources. “Through this effort, I have been able to reach students across the country, breaking down barriers, and helping them feel supported during a pivotal stage in their careers,” added Herman. She has mentored college students exploring medicine and medical students who are eager to learn more about the field of pathology.
She also partnered with U-M Pathology alumnus Dr. James Billman, to establish two scholarships that provide ongoing support for students pursuing careers in laboratory medicine. “This initiative has been especially meaningful to me, as it represents a way to create lasting opportunities for the next generation of trainees,” said Herman.
In addition, she serves on the CAP Digital and Computational Pathology Committee, the Association of Pathology Chairs’ AAMC Organization of Resident Representatives, and the Michigan Society of Pathologists Resident and Medical Student Forum. In these roles she is helping to shape the future of pathology, foster community, and create mentorship and professional development opportunities.
“Across these roles, my focus has consistently been on mentorship, advocacy, and building supportive environments, whether through one-on-one guidance, developing structured mentorship networks, or fostering collaboration within professional organizations. My goal has always been to open doors, ensure that students feel welcomed into pathology, and empower them to become the next generation of leaders in our specialty. I believe that my creative and enthusiastic approach has helped spark meaningful connections and global collaborations that showcase the best of what the pathology community has to offer,” concluded Herman.
Congratulations, Meredith! We are proud of your efforts and achievements.
