Dr. Sean Li receives the GME Program Director Excellence AwardOn May 6, 2026, Dr. Shih-Hon (Sean) Li, Associate Professor and Director of the Pathology Residency Program, received the GME Program Director Excellence Award from the University of Michigan Medical School. This award recognizes one of the 100+ residency or fellowship directors who has had a significant impact on the quality of education in their respective training program. The award criteria include a demonstrated commitment to teaching through dedication, innovation, creativity, leadership, teamwork, advocacy, crisis management, role modeling, and overall impact on the program.

Li was nominated for this award by colleagues and resident trainees, who emphasized his collaborative problem-solving, leading to “a thoughtful restructuring of the surgical pathology work week, which improved not only resident wellness, but also resident education.” Another commented how he “spearheaded wellness-focused initiatives that directly addressed burnout and fostered a safer learning environment.” His impact on the program was summarized by one who indicated, “It is precisely this Culture that Sean helps foster that makes it a joy to be a part of the program, above and beyond any objective metrics which are themselves outstanding.”

Dr. Sean Li and Laura Jacobus, Residency Program Administrator, taking a selfie at the GME Awards ceremony.“I am very grateful to have been nominated and selected. This award does not reflect anything particularly special that I did, but represents the excellence of all who are involved in the department,” said Li. “A lot of people work hard to make our residency program outstanding. While directing the residency program was an unplanned leadership opportunity, it has been one of the most gratifying professional experiences I have had, and this award is extremely meaningful to me.”

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Shih Hon (Sean) Li on this well-deserved award.
