Twelve Pathology Faculty Promotions Approved

On May 21, 2026, the University of Michigan Board of Regents approved promotions for 12 Department of Pathology Faculty. Their new appointments take effect September 1, 2026.

Twelve Pathology faculty were approved for promotion effective Sept. 1, 2026.

Clinical Professor

Brian L. Betz, PhD: Dr. Betz is the Technical Director of Molecular and Genomic Pathology in the Division of Genetics and Genomics

Aaron M. Udager, MD, PhD: Dr. Udager provides patient care services in genitourinary pathology, head and neck pathology, and surgical pathology. He also co-directs the Physician Scientist Training Pathway (PSTP) Fellowship Program.

Allecia M. Wilson, MD: Dr. Wilson is the Director of Autopsy and Forensic Services and directs the Forensic Pathology Fellowship Program.

Clinical Associate Professor

David B. Chapel, MD: Dr. Chapel provides patient care services in gynecologic pathology, is the Medical Director of the Frozen Section Labs, and directs the Gynecologic Pathology Fellowship Program.

Jensyn K. Cone Sullivan, MD: Dr. Cone Sullivan provides patient care services in the blood bank and transfusion medicine. She serves as the Technical Supervisor of the Blood Bank, Medical Director of the Cellular Therapy Laboratory, and directs the Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Program.

Steven M. Hrycaj, PhD: Dr. Hrycaj provides patient care services in immunohistochemistry in diagnostic pathology, and is the Technical Director of the Immunohistochemistry Laboratory.

Cathryn J. Lapedis, MD, MPH, MSc: Dr. Lapedis provides patient care services in renal pathology and serves as a faculty advisor for pathology residents.

Professor with Tenure

Jeffrey B. Hodgin, MD, PhD: Dr. Hodgin provides patient care services in renal pathology and is the Director of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory, and maintains an active research program on glomerular injury, with a focus on podocyte biology.

Associate Professor with Tenure

Russell J.H. Ryan, MD: Dr. Ryan provides patient care services in hematopathology and has an active research program studying the regulatory control of oncogene expression in B-cell lymphomas and leukemias.

Associate Research Scientist

Jean Tien, PhD: Dr. Tien is a basic and translational cancer researcher specializing in the in vivo modeling of malignancies as part of the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology.  She applies animal models to evaluate putative cancer-related genes identified on large-scale sequencing, and performs pre-clinical testing of novel therapeutic agents.

Assistant Research Scientist

Joseph Pickard, PhD: Dr. Pickard is a researcher focused on the mechanisms by which microbiota regulate the colonization of enteric pathogens in the gut, working in the Gabriel Núñez laboratory.

José A. Raya Sandino, PhD, MS: Dr. Raya Sandino is a researcher in the Nusrat-Parkos laboratory studying the mechanisms regulating the function of tight junction-associated proteins that play critical roles in mediating intestinal epithelial cell proliferation, migration, and barrier function during health and disease.
