The USCAP University Partnership Program (U²P²) is a new opportunity designed to deepen the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathologists (USCAP) investment in international pathologists who have demonstrated excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to advancing pathology in their home countries. Each year, one or two pathologists from an underserved country will be selected from the Global Partner Travel Award recipients pool to participate in a four-week observership at a US or Canadian academic institution immediately following the USCAP Annual Meeting.
In the program’s inaugural year, Dr. Truong Nguyen, a pathologist from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, began his neuropathology observership in Michigan Medicine’s Department of Pathology. His experience has been impactful, gaining valuable insights into advanced neuropathology techniques that will enhance pathology education and diagnostic capabilities in Vietnam, benefiting his community and healthcare initiatives.
USCAP Foundation representative Daniela Gomez stated, “Dr. Truong Phan Xuan Nguyen,..spent the past month with the amazing neuropathology team at the University of Michigan. The experience will have a lasting impact on pathology education and patient care in his community. So grateful to the U-M team for being such thoughtful and generous hosts.”
"I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the USCAP Foundation and the University of Michigan for their collaboration in organizing the USCAP University Partnership Program. Through this program, I had an opportunity to spend a month at the Department of Pathology at the University of Michigan, where I observed and deepened my understanding of neuropathology — a field that is both challenging and fascinating, and one that deserves greater focus in my home country, Vietnam," Dr. Nguyen added.
Dr. Sandra Camelo-Piragua described the opportunities presented to Dr. Nguyen, “Dr. Nguyen was assigned to different services each week, including our in-house neurosurgical, consult neurosurgical, and nerve and muscle services. He also attended brain-cutting sessions and departmental interdisciplinary conferences", she said. "He had the opportunity to rotate with most of our neuropathology faculty, including Drs. Sara Stone, Kyle Conway, and me. He also interacted with our senior fellows, especially Dr. Nicole Becker, who is doing a Junior Acting Attending rotation. Finally, he participated in our DNA-methylation sign-out sessions with Drs. Stone and Conway.” This was an immersive and in-depth training opportunity.
"In addition to broadening my expertise in neuropathology, I was fortunate to build connections that will support future consultations on challenging cases from my institution and create opportunities to invite these esteemed colleagues to Vietnam to deliver lectures and share their knowledge with our pathology community," said Dr. Nguyen. "Finally, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Department of Pathology and the neuropathology team at the University of Michigan for their support and mentorship throughout my stay."
This is just one of many examples of how Michigan Medicine’s Department of Pathology is making a difference not just in Michigan but around the world.
