Quality Improvement

Every member of the Department of Pathology, including our residents and fellows, plays a critical role in our culture of patient safety and quality diagnoses and test results. That’s why we have a quality improvement (QI) module in our graduate medical education curriculum to develop the requisite skills in our trainees.

Our rationale for helping Pathology residents develop their skills in QI include:

  • Patients expect physicians at all steps in the care process to provide safe, effective, and high value care;
  • Regulatory agencies (American Council for Graduate Medical Education, Residency Review Committees) require residency programs integrate safety and quality training into their curriculum;
  • Residents are interested in learning and acquiring tools to provide high quality, cost effective care that will be necessary to their future practice

The goals of our Pathology QI Curriculum are:

  • Prepare our pathologists to be stewards of safe, high quality, high value, patient centered care;
  • Equip Pathology residents with effective tools and techniques to deliver quality results and patient care;
  • Develop a culture of safety and quality that trainees will carry with them throughout their career;
  • Cultivate future leaders in healthcare.
