Policies

Sample Accessioning

Chemistry STAT samples and urines will be accessioned by Chemistry Distribution staff.

Routine samples, Relative of”, and M-Labs clients will be accessioned by Central Distribution.

Ordering Individual Tests That Are Included in a Group

The following components of groups can be added individually when a partial group has already been ordered:

TIBC Orders both IBC and Total Iron
MB Orders both CK-MB and Total CK
PSAR Orders both Free PSA and Total PSA
COMP + BASIC Order only COMP
COMP + LIVER Order COMP, BILI
BASIC + LYTES Order only BASIC

Bilirubins on Infants


BILIFRAC/TBIL: Do not order on infants less than 14 days old.
Order BILI (Bilirubin, conjugated and unconjugated)

Add-on Tests


Telephone requests for adding tests to specimens already in CD or the laboratory will be honored
if possible. Inform the physician/nurse that authorization for the add-on must be sent to the
laboratory.

Canceled Tests


All pertinent information, including cancel reason, location at which the specimen was drawn,
and page number of medical staff making the request is documented.

Requests to Amend Patient Records


Requests to remove results from a patient file are referred to a supervisor.


Ordering Tests on CSF Samples
The following tests are available for CSF samples:
Glucose
Protein
LDH
Lactic Acid
HIV-1 Rapid Test
Rapid HIV-1 is performed in instances of employee exposure.
Other requests must be approved by the pathology resident or laboratory director.

Special Instructions for Other Fluids
The following are the most commonly ordered tests on other fluids have special ordering instructions:
Glucose, Total Bilirubin, Potassium, Triglycerides, UN, LDH, Chloride, Amylase,
Creatinine, Uric Acid, Total Protein, Lipase, Sodium, Cholesterol, Albumin
