Each year, the Michigan Medicine family nominates faculty and staff from across our campus for their consistent effort to go above and beyond in their fields. In December, the Faculty and Staff Award ceremony is a time for gathering and celebrating their outstanding achievements.

In the Department of Pathology, Madelyn Lew, MD, goes above and beyond in medical education, solidifying her excellence in pathology and education. This year, for the Faculty and Staff Awards, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement in Medical Education Award. Lew is the director of the program for learning innovation and career enhancement, a Clinical Professor of Pathology, and the Director of Pathology Education and Curriculum. Lew was nominated by her colleagues and trainees.

“Dr. Madelyn Lew has transformed how generations of Michigan medical students learn pathology," stated Kamran Mirza, MBBS, PhD, Assistant Chair for Education. "Her teaching is rigorous yet human, her mentorship both personal and profound. Though early in her career, her impact already spans decades of learners, and her influence on the future of medical education is only just beginning.”

Lew, a cytopathologist and Director of Medical School Pathology Education Curriculum, is widely admired by students for her dynamic teaching style and dedication to mentorship. Known for transforming the way pathology is taught, Dr. Lew helped redesign the curriculum to make it more concise, interactive, and technologically engaging, including the addition of a week-long pathology rotation within the Surgery Clerkship. Lew seeks to instill in students a lasting fascination with medicine and a deeper understanding of the integral role of pathology in patient care. She finds joy both in sparking moments of clarity during lectures and in mentoring students as they chart their professional journeys.

"I am truly grateful for this recognition, which I share with the incredible mentors, colleagues, and departmental leaders who have supported and inspired me throughout my journey in medical education," stated Lew. "I feel fortunate to work alongside so many talented educators and learners, whose passion, curiosity, and commitment make this work so rewarding. The collaborative spirit and dedication of our community are the cornerstones of my motivation and inspiration in this field."
