Under the Direction of Dr. Rohit Mehra, of Pathology, and Dr. Ajjai Alva, of Medical Oncology, the Rapid Autopsy Program has been expanded and renamed the Michigan Legacy Tissue Program (MLTP). Originally started by Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan and Dr. Kenneth Pienta in 1996, the Rapid Autopsy Program was formed to retrieve metastatic prostate tumors for molecular study. New Breast Cancer Metastasis Mechanism Uncovered

The laboratory of Dr. Celina Kleer, Harold A. Oberman Collegiate Professor, isolated human mesenchymal stem cells from breast cancer metastasis. The lab discovered that a collagen receptor tyrosine kinase, DDR2, mediates stromal-cancer communication and induces breast cancer metastasis. The study provides the basis for the development of DDR2 inhibitors. The article appeared in Cell Reports and can be found at www.cell.com.

Chemistry’s Nick Wesener to Serve Two-Year Term on Alere Informatics’ Advisory Board

Kudos to Chemical Pathology’s Nick Wesener, MLS (ASCP)cm, Senior Clinical IT, POC for being selected to serve on the Alere Informatics RALS Advisory Board (RAB). The purpose of the RAB is to facilitate transparent discussion between Alere Informatics and the point-of-care testing community. Topics include issues and trends that may influence the way RALS Point-of-Care Data Management Systems programs are managed. Those selected to serve on this board are considered leaders in the field of point-of-care testing who can provide valuable feedback to Alere Informatics and experience and knowledge to other RALS users.

Pathology Laboratory Reports Structure of BMI1-PHC2 complex

The laboratory of Dr. Tomasz Cierpicki has determined the structure of BMI1 protein in complex with PHC2 and characterized its role in regulation of the architecture and activity of the PRC1. The article "BMI1 regulates PRC1 architecture and activity through homo- and hetero-oligomerization" has been published in Nature Communications. Co-first authors are Felicia Gray, Hyo-Je Cho and Shirish Shukla, and this is a collaborative study with Dr. Grembecka and Dr. Lawlor from the Department of Pathology.

Effective immediately, Dr. Allecia Wilson is the Program Director for the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency Program. Dr. Wilson completed residency here at Michigan, followed by Forensic Pathology and later Pediatric Pathology fellowships. International collaboration leads to clues about rare cancer

Dr. Thomas Giordano, M.D., Ph.D, the Henry Clay Bryant Professor of Pathology, led an international study on the genomics of adrenal cancer. The project was one of the 33 projects that comprise The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project of the NCI and NHGRI. The study results were published in Cancer Cell.

Pathology Laboratory Reports New Findings in the Journal Molecular Cell

The laboratory of Dr. Yali Dou, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Pathology, reported new findings in the article “PRDM16 suppresses MLL1r leukemia via intrinsic histone methyltransferase activity” which was published in the journal Molecular Cell on April 27th, 2016. Dr. Venneti named Kimmel Scholar for his cancer research efforts

Assistant Professor, Sriram Venneti, MD, PhD, was named a Kimmel Scholar by the Sidney Kimmel Foundation. The Kimmel Scholar Awards are given annually to 15 innovative research scientists and medical doctors in the U.S. who are in the early stages of their careers. Dr. Venneti will receive a $200,000 grant for his work, titled, “Metabolic regulation of epigenetics in childhood brain tumors.” Congratulations, Dr. Venneti, on being recognized as one of the country’s most promising young cancer researchers!

Dr. David Lombard Inducted into ASCI

Dr. David Lombard was inducted into the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI).

The ASCI is an honor society of physician-scientists, those who translate findings in the laboratory to the advancement of clinical practice. Founded in 1908, the Society is home to nearly 3,000 members who are leaders in academic medicine and industry. Dr. Lombard was one of only 74 new members inducted at the annual ASCI meeting on April 15th.

Congratulations to Dr. Asma Nusrat, Director of Experimental Pathology on her election as Vice President of the American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP). Apply for the Pathology Proteomics Resource Facility Pilot Project Program

Description: The Department of Pathology invites applications from faculty with primary appointment in Pathology for proteomics related Pilot Projects that intend to use the state-of-the-art Proteomics Resource Facility (PRF) at the University of Michigan Medical School that is led by Dr. Alexey Nesvizhskii. Funds are primarily meant to help offset the cost of proteomic experiments, the results of which could potentially form the basis for or strengthen an extramural grant application. The grant is a cost share (2/3 funded by Department of Pathology and 1/3 by the investigator).

Who Can Apply: Department of Pathology Faculty

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed on a monthly basis. Applications received by Monday February 29, 2016 will be reviewed by March 8, 2016.

Lauren B. Smith Named UMHS Hospital Ethicist

Lauren Smith was named a UMHS Hospital Ethicist effective January 1, 2016. In this role, she serves as one of eight Ethicists funded through the Office of Clinical Affairs. The Ethicists are responsible for fielding ethics consults for adult and pediatric services and conducting educational sessions for the hospital. Lauren has served on the Adult Ethics Committee since 2005 and has been the Director of the University of Michigan Medical School Path of Excellence in Ethics since 2013.

Regents approve design for clinical pathology lab project

The Board of Regents approved the design for the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers Clinical Pathology Laboratories Relocation and Renovation project. Approximately 186,000 gross square feet of space will be renovated within North Campus Research Complex Buildings 30, 35, 36 and 60, as well as University Hospital and University Hospital South to enhance the clinical lab functions necessary to meet present and future growth in test volumes, improve operational efficiency, and reduce the expense from having labs in their current locations. Hospitals and Health Centers' resources are funding the $160 million project that is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2019.

Loss of a Member in the UM Family

It is with sincere sadness that we mark the passing of Paul W. Gikas, MD.  He died peacefully at home on March 23.  The funeral will be March 27 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor at 11am.  Dr. Gikas was a longtime member of the UM family, doing his undergraduate, medical degrees and residency here.  After his service in the US Army Medical Corps, Paul became a faculty member in Pathology in 1959, with an interest . . .
