Drs. Ali-Fehmi and Mehra Named to Hour Detroit’s 2025 “Top Docs” List

Congratulations to Dr. Rouba Ali-Fehmi and Dr. Rohit Mehra for being named among Hour Detroit magazine’s “Top Docs” of 2025. Drs. Ali-Fehmi and Mehra are two of only six pathologists recognized this year out of more than 1,000 physicians across all specialties, highlighting the department’s ongoing excellence in research, education, and clinical leadership.

Each year, Hour Detroit collaborates with Professional Research Services (PRS) to survey physicians in southeastern Michigan. Doctors across five counties nominate their peers, resulting in a list of the region's most respected and accomplished physicians.

“It is such a great honor to be nominated by my colleagues,” said Dr. Rouba Ali-Fehmi, professor of pathology and director of breast pathology and the breast pathology fellowship at the University of Michigan. Rouba Ali-Fehmi

In 2010, Dr. Ali-Fehmi founded the Clinical Training Research Associate (CTRA) program at Wayne State University, which has helped more than 36 international medical graduates gain research experience and successfully match into residency programs. Additionally, she has mentored numerous fellows in gynecologic oncology and pathology, contributing to over 150 peer-reviewed publications and presentations worldwide.

She is also the founder and current chair of the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA) NextGen, an organization that supports Arab American healthcare students through mentorship, fundraising, and networking opportunities. NAAMA NextGen’s initiatives include Piano Keys for Syrian Kids, a benefit concert supporting Syrian refugees, and an annual summit that attracts over 200 students and prominent guest speakers.

Dr. Rouba Ali-Fehmi is the director and co-founder of the Global Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (GPALM) program at the University of Michigan. In 2024, this program organized the first Global Pathology Summit in Ann Arbor, Michigan, bringing together over 80 leading academics and global health experts from Ghana, Lebanon, Egypt, Peru, and the United States to discuss various aspects of global health and pathology.

This marks the third consecutive year that Dr. Rohit Mehra, Godfrey Dorr Stobbe research professor of translational pathology and director of the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology’s Esoteric Clinical Laboratory Services, has been named to this list.

“I am truly honored to receive this award,” said Dr. Mehra. “I am deeply grateful to my mentors, colleagues, collaborators, and most importantly, our patients. Thank you all once again.” Rohit Mehra

As Genitourinary Service Line Director for MLabs, Dr. Mehra serves as a regional and national consultant, helping to solve complex diagnostic challenges and reviewing numerous extramural consultations. He has also led efforts to translate clinically significant molecular oncology discoveries into diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic assays.

Dr. Mehra contributes to national and international cancer research initiatives through his participation in projects and peer-review services with PCF, GUPS, CPTAC, and TCGA. He has contributed to several multidisciplinary NIH-funded and non-NIH-funded studies investigating clinical and translational aspects of genitourinary malignancies.

In addition, Dr. Mehra directs the Michigan Legacy Tissue Program (MLTP) at Michigan Medicine, which advances cancer research through the generous tissue donations of patients and their families.

Congratulations to Drs. Ali-Fehmi and Mehra on this well-deserved honor.
