PhD Program

Admissions

Application for admissions to the Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Pathology should be made via: Program in Biomedical Science (PIBS) or Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP).

Students interested exclusively in obtaining a Ph.D. should apply through PIBS. The application process is described on the PIBS website, and the application is made through the Univeristy of Michigan Rackham Graduate School.

PIBS offers first year graduate students interested in biomedical research the chance to explore the opportunities for advanced study in 14 different doctoral degree granting programs, which together include nearly 300 participating faculty. The first semester of study includes core courses in areas of cellular and molecular biology common to many fields. This leaves time during the first year of study for students to select elective courses in potential areas of specialization, as well as for intensive research rotations. At the end of the first year, students will select a degree program (Bioinformatics, Biological Chemistry, Biophysics, Cancer Biology, Cell and Developmental Biology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Human Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, Neuroscience, Molecular and Cellular Pathology, Pharmacology, or Physiology) and a lab for thesis research. The application deadline for fall 2016 admissions is December 1, 2015.

MSTP is a joint effort of the graduate and medical schools to provide balanced training in science and medicine. Graduates of MSTP receive both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. The application process is described here, and includes a Medical School Application (AMCAS and secondary) and letters of reference. The MSTP deadline is October 15.  You will be considered for admission to the Medical School alone should you not be accepted into the MSTP.

The International Center provides assistance and services of interest to international students.

The Pathology Department's Faculty Members and their research interests are available, and we welcome inquiries from prospective students interested in either the PIBS or MSTP programs.

The University of Michigan and the Rackham Graduate School  provide much information about the excellence in graduate education offered in Ann Arbor.

Funding

Funding for Ph.D. students consists of research assistantships provided by the department and faculty research grants. This support covers all tuition costs and includes a monthly living stipend (current annual stipend for 2015-2016 is $29,025) and healthcare. Information regarding the PIBS program funding is available here.

For additional sources of aid on campus, refer to the Rackham Graduate Studies site.
