Digital Pathology

eSlide Manager:  Getting Started

eSlide Manager allows clients to view their slides together with the associated metadata. Note that images cannot be downloaded from eSlide Manager; actual copies of SVS files must be requested through Digital Pathology (slidescanningserv[at]med.umich.edu).

You must first obtain an eSlide manager account. If you are a new user and we have been in contact, I will create an account for you and grant appropriate data viewing privileges.

To view your slide images, sign on to eSlide Manager.  Use Edge or Chrome, or Safari if using a Mac.

Your Username is your UM uniqname, and your password is your U-M Level 2.

Note:  the videos below show eSlide Manager version 12.2.  As of summer 2020 we have upgraded to version 12.4, so the appearance will be different, but the principles remain the same.

Understanding eSlide Manager (see also the introductory videos above)

I.          To find your images:

a.       Click the Advanced Search icon at the top of the page.  It is a magnifying glass with a plus sign in it.

b.      At left, locate the subheading “Modify Search Criteria.”  Below that, click on the + sign next to “The eSlide Fields.”

c.       Choose the appropriate field description to search.  Common ones include Accesion/ID#, PI/Attending, or Diagnosis.

II.         What kinds of information are included in eSlide Manager?

a.       Clinical: UM Pathology accession #, outside institution accession # if applicable, block, stain, anatomic site, and diagnosis

b.      Clerical: the ID# of the scan request, image ID numbers, date scanned, contact person who filled out the request form

c.      Other:  whether the slide is on the Virtual Slide Box and whether it was ever shown at a tumor board or other conference.

III.        How is eSlide Manager different from the search engine within the Pathology Clinical Lab Portal?

      1. eSlide Manager functions as both a database and a way to view images.
      2. eSlide Manager is a Leica product and is a required part of our current slide scanning system (scanners plus picture-archive database).
      3. The search engine within the Clinical Lab Portal was created as a more user-friendly way to view images.
      4. Images cannot be found using the search engine within the Clinical Lab Portal unless we have entered metadata (accession #, dx, etc) into eSlide Manager first.
      5. Most Pathology faculty and House Officers can access eSlide Manager with their UM uniqname and Level 2 password. If you cannot access eSlide Manager, email slidescanningserv[at]med.umich.edu.
