Choosing a Graduate School and Advisor

The Graduate School

  1. Focus on the department/program, not just the school.—What is the Department’s reputation and ranking?  Ask your undergraduate faculty where the best programs for your career goals are located.  Get a list of the top programs to consider.
    • University of Michigan Department of Pathology is ranked 9th among the best pathology schools in the USA and the University of Michigan is ranked #2 in NIH funding.
  2. Consider the location for lifestyle fit.—Where is the school located?  Do you prefer living in a large city or a smaller community?  Do you enjoy skiing or surfing or jogging?  What is the culture of the community?  Is it a good fit for you?
    • In 2018, Ann Arbor, Michigan was ranked #1 among the Best Places to Live by Livability.com and Niche.com and #1 Best College Towns and Cities in America by WalletHub.com.
    • The Ann Arbor campus is 3,207 acres situated right in Ann Arbor, which is known for bountiful parks and trails, a progressive culture, low crime, healthy environment, over 200 diverse restaurants, strong schools and neighborhoods, and frequent festivals with free outdoor music.
  3. Consider your potential peers—Visit and engage with other students and potential recruits.  Are these people you would enjoy working with?  Graduate school is a time where you should be building lifelong friendships which will be a resource for you as you move forward in your career.  Is the culture of the student body one that “clicks” with you?
    • The Molecular and Cellular Graduate Program will host recruiting visit weekends on January 24th-26th & January 31st-February 2nd, 2019. These weekends are by invitation only. You must to apply to PIBS (Program in Biological Sciences) to be invited.
    • The MCP students put on an annual research symposium and enjoy many social activities together including a welcome picnic, camping trips, ice cream socials, and community outreach projects, to name a few.

Your Advisor

  1. Determine what you need from your advisor—Do you prefer to work independently or work more closely with your advisor?  Senior research faculty often have many competing responsibilities and larger labs to oversee.  They will have less time to spend with you 1:1 than more junior faculty.  However, with larger labs, you will have more colleague with whom to work and consult.
    • The MCP program has more than 40 Pathology Graduate Faculty from which to choose your advisor, ranging from junior to senior faculty, with diverse backgrounds and research areas.
  2. Ask about their prior students—How do they speak about their prior students?  Are they proud of them or only of those who pursued careers in academia?  What types of positions have these students obtained after graduation?  Are these in line with your career goals?
    • MCP graduates find positions in a wide variety of fields, from academia to industry to the NIH and beyond.  Click here to learn more about the careers our graduates have pursued.
  3. Evaluate your “fit” with the advisor—Are your personalities complimentary?  As you speak to the advisor, do you connect?  Ask the advisor about what type of graduate career they envision you having in their lab.  Do they have a plan?  Would you enjoy working with him/her?
    • With over 40 potential advisors from which to choose, you are sure to find a great MCP faculty advisor!  We are happy to introduce you to our faculty.  To learn more about our faculty advisors, click here.
  4. Talk to current students—Are the current students in the lab happy?  Are they optimistic and excited about their research projects?  What kind of hours are they expected to keep?  Are they working 18 hour days and weekends or do they show up when they feel like it or somewhere in between?  What types of projects are they working on?  Were they able to pick the project or was the project assigned?
    • The MCP Graduate Program encourages you to apply to the PIBS program so you can be invited to attend our recruitment weekends in late January/early February! If you have questions regarding these weekends, please contact Laura Labut at laszczem@med.umich.edu.
